Bta split

[my BTA that I got from Buyitjody a month ago split today! I was just telling a friend the other day that it had double in size and was close to 10 inches across. Now I have 2 5 inchers. I am so pleased. I have been feeding shrimp dipped in selcon for the last two weeks and man it must have really loved it.

I have read that Anemones split becasue of stress but I have not done a water change in 3 weeks and everything else in the tank is really growing, so maybe they split when they are really happy to.

I may sell it if it starts to move around but a friend has dibs unless cody gets him a seabae soon. If not I will post letting you guys know you can start the bidding :)]

[I've never heard that about the "stress" factor. BTAs are great IMO because they are easy to propagate. BTW did you get the pictures you requested yet?]

[you got mail! SO how often will this happen? Jody's split two weeks before I got it (maybe three). So am I to expect every 2 months?]

[That's cool, Mitch. I have a rose BTA that I'm hoping gets on the ball one day soon... How much have you been feeding yours?]

[I have been feeding him a coupe nice pieces of krill every 2 or 3 days. I just added selcon to the formual a couple days ago. He was right in the middle of my tank in prob the brightest spot, right between those 400's. He started grow very fast last 8-9 days. I now hope they don't go to another spot and reek havoc across my tank!]

[No, its very random, it could split again tommorow, or wait many months. From what i understand they split when injured and when they get large, i prefer mine to split when hes large :D]

[Mitch,

I'm so glad the anemone worked out better than expected! Although, if I would have know he was going to split again, I would have kept him so I would have 2 to sell!! :D When mine first split (a month before you got the larger half of it), they both moved around the tank a little, but it only took them a couple days to find a spot they liked. They did sting a couple corals (I don't have that many, as you know), but the stung corals have all fully recovered. Hopefully you only charge half to 2/3 what you paid me for it. Do I get commission? :p

I'd love to see pictures! Being that you have halides, it sounded like it looked very nice compared to my power compacts.]

[Jody,

Yes the color was amazing for a week but has really browned/pionked up after week one. Someone said it was regaining its zooanthe (i know i spelled that one wrong) :shifty:

So can I consider this a 3rd generation captive raised anemone?

My tank is full up with corals and if they moved a foot or two in either direcion it would reek havoc. How long to keep him before he is moved to a new home? I wish I had pics of him before the split he was at least 10 inches in diameter!

I have another tank(not yet completed) and may start to propagate them if I keep having good luck.]

[Mitch,

I was told that it would be wise to wait AT LEAST a month before moving an anemone after it splits. Some others might have experience on moving earlier. The color may also have to do with the fact that you have pretty intense lighting compared to mine...might have freaked him out or something to begin with. I'm no expert though.

I have also heard that sometimes anemones do split if they are stressed, but I don't really know if there is a way you can tell what caused it. Since he had gotten so big, it probably wasn't stress, but with the combination of the move and the brighter lighting, who knows.

Enjoy, and hopefully they don't move too far. Some folks say they just stay where they are even after a split.]
