I came across this recently and thought I'd pass it on:

wow, and i was just wanting to get a couple...but i guess ill just use my regular ones and make due...thanks for the heads up

The can's i have have the safe for food stamp on them. I plan on still using mine. And would buy the same ones if something happened to one of these.

Over the years I have bought a couple of Brute brand trash cans. They ended up with a pin hole leak at the bottom of the can. One of them, the self rolling one lasted years before the leak happened. This last time I bought a Toter brand rolling container that is heavier and not made out of that soft molded plastic that the Brute cans are made of. I use the 64 gallon can but they have a smaller one. They are heavy duty cans and not cheap, but I did not want anymore leaks to happen and I use them for years so the cost was offset.

I have gotten away from the Brute. I know plastic leaches into water and I don't believe it's safe for humans to drink. I've been drinking out of glass now all the time. So surely it's not good for our tanks.

I got a new barrel from American Plastics which is supposed to be for holding chemicals and not have the leaching problem. It was expensive. I really don't know the answer. It's not like you can use something else besides plastic, right? If anyone comes up with an answer I'd be interested to know.

Hey Kay, haven't seen any posts by you in a while. How's your tank?

My tank is a 100 gallon rubber maid tub right now with sps frags and colonies, two clowns and rbta's and two hairy urchins and snails and clams. They seem to be all right for the last 8 months. I'm planning on setting up the new tank soon as my husband got around to reinforcing the floor. Right now the cabinet's being skinned. I can't believe my stuff has kept alive this long. The sps is looking a little faded, but everything else is going along fine. I have the stuff sitting on egg crate which is sitting on live rock. Not much to be proud of right now.

I'm sure it'll look great again. Hopefully you'll get the new tank up before the end of the year. :)

I have just been using the rubbermaid brand. I think we can get contamination from anything. Heck look at you ro/di...if you container isnt dry/clean its off the tds scale. My raw water here is 475 before ro/di. After its usually less than 3 tds. So i dont worry too much. Im just saying , how much is the bucket or bag your salt is shipped in leaching into your salt??? :D

how do you tell what plastic is ok to use for potable water? could the salt buckets, the 5 gallon jugs we carry fish water in, the buckets from home depot? which of these are safe i am sure we could find other plasti containers we use

You want to find the food-grade material stamped to the base of the container. HDPE is what to look for: High-density polyethylene

A little extra bit of info I've picked up: Food-grade or potable doesn't necessarily mean "safe for reef life" (and some would argue that it doesn't mean "safe for humans" either...). Honestly, I don't know the details about the controversy but like Marc said, HDPE is a safe bet. It's very stingy with it's molecules, so to speak.

On this topic, I'd consider the source. Eric B's worst guess is probably better than my best guess ;-)
