Brown dusty stuff in sump?

I have brown dusty stuff resting on the bottom of my sump, especially in the return chamber.

How do I reduce this and what is it?
 
well...hmmmm...to describe the brown stuff left over after the fish eat...let me think about that [smilie=rofl.gif]

many people just suck it out during their water changes, ie getting a small pump like a maxijet and pumping it out. its basically a dead spot in your sump and it is just not staying in the water column long enough for the skimmer to get it
 
Here are some photos. I will try to suck out as much as possilbe on every water change.

Is there a way to reduce this? It sounds like it is not all that harmful to my tank?

No, it is not harmful. It's just detritus, settled out as the water traverses that area.
