How much flow do you have in your tank?

Describe your setup a little bit. ie...

What kind of skimmer?
Do you have a sump/refugium?
How much live rock?
What are the current parameters?

Maybe we can offer some help if we know a little more about your tank.

By the way... Let me be the first to welcome you to the boards!

the brownish algae is normal at the end of the cycling process. i would still give it a few more weeks before adding anything else in.

what kind of fish did you put in your tank?

for future reference, you can do a fishless tank cycle with just your live rock.

i have a marineland emperor hob and a prizsm skimmer, 2 maxi jet 900s and a rena canister filter my fuge is under construction and the tank has about 50-60 lbs of rock

I just moved my 6 gallon to my sons new 33 and it is getting some of the brown algae... new tank thing... All the live rock was curred and 5 pounds of sand was live. the other 20 or so pounds was not. I haven't lost any fish. I would get all your water parameters before adding anymore fish and maybe give the tank time to cycle and get happy. :O) Welcome to the reef hobby!! Very addictive I might warn you. I have always been a water nut though so it comes with the genes :O) Be patient when adding coral or fish try and pace yourself and give the tank time to adjust. Loosing fish and corals is sad and expensive. Oh and ALWAYS research fish before you buy for compatiblility.... :O) Good luck!
