brooklynella

I am new to the hobby and my wife and I were so pleased with our tank. all the fish were fine for a couple of months and I did a stupid thing. I bought a fish from a GUEST that said it was being chased by another one of his fish and he wanted to give it a good home, so we went and picked him up. Due to my inexperience i didn;t take much notice of the spotty and dull color of the fish, I thought he was just stressed and need a good healthy enviroment and he would get better. 3 days after getting him I noticed 1 of my matched pair of blakc clowns was starting to stay at the bottom of the tank [again inexperience I didn't take any action] the next day the clown was dead. I begain to get a little worried then the second black clown started swimming at the bottom of the tank, the next day he was gone. I payed $150 bucks for these but it wasen't the money, it was the lose of the fish that hurt us. then we started noticing our orange clowns getting spots and looking a listless and swimming at the bottom of the tank. they are eating fine but they go to the bottom of the tank after word. We also noticed our Coral beauty taking on the same symptoms. the Coral beauty was dead the next day, the Clowns are hangin in there. I have a 6 line wrasse and 5 Chromis and a Blue tang [that we are very fond of we do not want to lose this tang] that are not showing any signs of the spotting but the tang is rubbing up aginst the live often. He still looks good but [this could be my imagination] I think he is breathing heavy or his gills are working harder. they are all still eating good. after doing some research on the web and looking at several photographs I am 95% certain they have Brokklynella. I also have several high dollar Corals in the tank a cleaner shrimp and 2 anemone. Can someone please tell me there is something i can treat my tank with that will not kill my coral and tarnish my tank for life and hopefully save the fish especially the tang. I unfortunately do not have a quarantine tank and do not have the money to start another tank for that right this minute. I hope someone has something that can help. also if there is nothing I can do to save the Fish will this kill my coral and linger or stay alive in the tank thus making the tank uninhabitable? please help!!

Again, I have only been in this hobby for a short while as well but are you sure it is brook? I am sorry for your loss as I lost a platinum clown due to a brook outbreak and that was $300 down the whole. It was bought from a LFS that I will never use again due to his supplier that he uses for his fish. Every single fish from that location came down with something. While all of the fish bought from True Percula have been perfectly fine and survived for over a year. It sounds more like ich! Do they have froth on their mouths (clowns?) Listless and swimming at the bottom of the tank in a corner. Blotchy areas around their body? Pics would greatly help. If I remember correctly it mainly affects clowns but I could be wrong. Ich however can affect anything. Any big temperature changes, salinity changes? What are your feeding habits? What do you supplement?

haven't noticed any froth but listles yes, swimming at the bottom in the corner yes, blotchy areas yes, I'll try and figure out how to put a picture on here I tried and it said the attachment was to big. I'm slightly retarded on uploading pictures still, sorry. and yes I had temperature problems about 4 days prior to the Apocalypse. the tank would go from 79 down to 75 over night and I figured out the heater was failling. I got a new heater and now it is 81 night and day. a temerature suggestion would be great also. I put it at 81 reading that it might help kill off the parasites and I have had several sources tell me many different temperatures were optimum. I have several different types of Coral so I would like to find a happy medium. Salinity is at about 1023 at 81 degress. I feed them twice a day Mysis and brine shrimp alternate and sometimes mixed. I always put a few drops of garlic and vitamin C in thier food for supplement. :I did ask Frank at Franks Tanks and he said all I could do is let it take its course there was nothing I could do. And I really respect his opinion but I have always been a fighter and I have a hard time just watching my fish die. there is a Tang that is very special to my wife and I and I can;t just do nothing. So I ask the opinion of a LFS owner close to me and he seemed certain this was an ICH based decease and sold me some stuff called "KICK ICH" he sai and the label said it was 100% Coral safe and it is a treatment that last 13 days. So i am going to try that, the only thing I don't like about that stuff is it tells you to turn off you skimmer and wait till the treament is over before doin your next water change. I change my water every week and don;t like the wait but I will try it. I feel better about it than just sitting back and watching my fish die. AND I MUST SAVE THAT TANG! at all cost. I'll keep trying to figure out how to load a picture on here for you . I want to thank you for taking time to help with any suggestions you might have.

I have used Kick Ick myself. While I will attest that it is coral safe, I can not endorse that it works on ick. Unfortunately the only way to get ice out of the tank is to get the fish out for 30+ days and break the lifecycle of the disease. You then can treat the fish with Hypo or Copper in a QT/Hospital tank. I had to set up 4 tanks to hold all my fish when I had the problem. Now no fish ever goes in my tank without spending 30+ days in my QT. My QT setup (30gallon) is also tied to my frag tank (30 gallon) now. Of course if I had a problem with a new purchase I would have to set up a new hospital to treat.

If you want to borrow one of my small tanks, let me know, unfortunately I am not home much to meet you but sure we could figure something out.

If you're getting an error it's too big you have to resize it.

I usually email it using outlook which prompts if you would like original size, small, medium or large; and then save the attachments from the email to upload. Or you could use: http://www.picresize.com/

Try that.

also don't knwo if this means anything but there is a strange alge like deposit in the glass. it is liitle round dark green spots and they are very hard to scrub off, would these have anything to do with whatever problem i'm having.

My initial guess is that its green coralline algae growing on the glass if its hard and hard to get off (google that and see if its similar). If it is, it has nothing to do with this situation. I have very limited experience with brooklynella or ich, so I can't diagnose it definitively. Matt (username Matt) is our resident fish whisper. Might reach out to him or wait for other responses.

I had almost the exact experience as u with losing 3 or 4 fish and at the same time my clown looked just like this. I had purchased a fish from a lfs. and did the big no no and did not QT. Might have been a coincidence but I think it was the new purchase carrying something.

I lost the clowns mate and the one left was swimming at the bottom and had a film on him. I setup my qt and really thought he was a goner but I had to try. I took water from the existing setup to ease the transition then stabilized the temp and acclimated him into qt. He wasn't eating either. I bought some antibiotics and I will verify what it was when I get home tonight if u are interested and dosed him. He started acting better a day or so later but then started swimming vertically. I read maybe peas would help. I boiled some peas and after cooling I mashed up a few and put a little in the tank. I don't know if he ate them because he was hungry or what but I read they can get constipated and it affects their swim bladder. I don't know what caused the primary issue or whether the antibiotics really helped or not but after a few days he was eating and swimming normally. I completed the 5 day dosage and checked the nitrates and ammonia daily while doing small water changes and aerated the water very well and had a filter with only floss running. I acclimated him after 5 days and he seemed very happy to be back home. That was about 6 weeks ago. No other problems in the tank since then and did not lose anyone else. He is my little hero!

yes sir if you can give me the name of the antibiotic I would much apreciate it. my 2 clowns are hanging in there and my wife and I have said to each other for the last 3 mights that they would not make through the night. Ok I am very new so please excuse the stupid questiion but what does it take to set up a cheap QT tank? Is it like setting up the main tank or is it a simplified version? What is needed to make it where they can survive until I can aclaimate them back to the m,ain tank? and what is the best water temperatur to run for both Corals and fish. I am doing 81 now because I read that parisites didn't like the hotter water and I have read the coral likes a little hotter water, but I would like to know what someone that has a successful reef/fish tank recomends so I can set it and keep it there. Thank you all very much.

I'll ask someone at home to tell me what is was and pm u.

For my qt I have an Eclipse 10 gal that has a small filtration system where I put floss. It was bare bottom and had a heater and thermometer. I put in a few short pieces of 2 inch round pvc for a hiding place and tested the water daily for ammonia and such. I kept the light off for the most part to keep him less stressed and kept the temp at 80. I added Seachem prime every other day after testing and did frequent small 1 gal water changes as the antibiotic instructed. I also put in a small pump with an airstone to improve O2 and tried small pieces of mysis a few times a day. I siphoned the bottom whenever I did the water change and just prayed he would make it. He is healthy as a horse now!

As far as temps in my display tanks I usually keep them around 80 as a general rule. I would search the board for a small tank that u could turn into a qt. I have 3 reef tanks and have only been in the hobby for about 2 years but there are many much more knowledgeable and helpful people that will comment.
