Brands of Return Pumps

Our Mag 9.5 went out and we need to replace our return pump. Any ideas on Mag 9.5 or possibly the Mag 12 vs Quiet One or any other pumps ?

Gigi

Eheim 1262 pump......very quiet, very reliable and never breaks. [smilie=clapping.gif] Even though the gph rating is nearly identical to the Mag 9.5, in reality is is a much more powerful pump and handles the head pressure better.

Cheers,

Moved to this forum.

Are you going to place the return pump inside the sump or outside? Depending on how you are going to use it, there are several good choices out there. By the way we are using a Mag 9.5 as a external return pump on our 75 gal tank and a Dart on the 200 gal along with another Mag 7 feeding the chiller and frag tank.

I believe that your Mag developed a voltage leakage that is really not normal.

Second on the Eheim. Either a 1260 or 1262 depending on your needs. I have both and they are great. Start every time and are very quiet.

I've got a lot of Mag pumps as well, good and reliable, just louder and seem to put out more heat.

If it is going to be internal I would also go with the Eheim pump since it will generate a lot less heat.

Whatever pump you choose be sure to get a spare impeller for it. When the time comes you will be glad that you did.

Don't forget about the new line of Maxijet Utility pumps. They can be used internally or externally, have a thermal protection switch to shut off if it overheats, and comes with a three year warranty. On top of that, they don't pull a lot of power. I did a review about them a few months ago. The warranty alone is a huge selling point to me.

Here is the pump Marc is talking about on sale at Marine Depot. http://www.marinedepot.com/Aquarium_Systems_Premium_Maxi_Jet_Utility_Pump_Up_to_500_Gallons_Per_Hour_Submersible_Water_Pumps-Instant_Ocean-AS1311-FIWPSBUF-vi.html

Quiet One pumps work excellent and are less expensive, use less electricity and run cooler that the Mag or Eheim. I think a lot of people overlook this particular brand when shopping and I am not sure why. Here is a comparison. This would be for an in sump application

Quiet One 4000 1017 gph 50 W $80
Mag 9 950 gph 93W $99
Eheim 1262 900 gph 80W $180
Rio 3100 999 gph 73W $70

i thinhk the quietones are hit and miss, ive been using one for almost 5 years with no problems but i have heard the issues from several people.
