Blue tort died in three days

My blue tort that I got at the last frag swap died. It had doubled in size. It turned white very fast. I broke off some ends to try to save them. Are blue torts hard to keep? My other sps are fine. I might have killed it by dumping my evaporation water on it now that I think about it.

Well, my tank is not too stable since I don't have a calcium reactor, but the temp is stable, and I test and add as necessary for alk and calcium. I'm going to put the fresh water into the sump from now on. I noticed about this coral that it did not encrust onto the rocks like the montipora. I had it wedged pretty well, but once in a while it would come loose. I guess after so much stress it gave up. I might try again when I get better parameters. It's so expensive to lose. Thanks for your advice.
Nothing else I can think of would cause this.

I've had little success with blue tortuosa. I think I've had 3 frags of it over the past couple of years, and they'd grow very slowly and then something would wipe them out in a day, just when my hopes would rise. It is a very frustrating coral to me, but I still haven't given up.

And I don't have a piece at this time. Taking a break - yeah, that's it.

Kay - Blue tort is probably more difficult to keep than Montipora, Pocillopra. However - blue tort is not any more difficult to keep than most of the Acoprora - especially the commonly available ORA blue tort (aka California tort). But you probably are right that a likely cause is the stability of your water. Fluctaction in your water could stress that particular sps- and over time, it just gave up. I have had sps RTN in a hurry that I have no clue - while there are many other sps thrived in the same environment. Dont' be discouraged but focus on getting your water stablized before you add more corals.

I always set my top off jug on top of my canopy and run an air tube to my sump to let water slowly enter the system. Dumping it all at once can cause a sizable swing, added to the sump or the tank...

Yeah. Good idea. I wonder if I should invest in an auto topoff next or a calcium reactor. This is getting expensive. I'm about to get a bigger sump that Marc is making for me. :D

Kay, you can't beat the price of an auto-top off.. $30 in parts and some DIY.. no soldering required, I promise.

FWIW, I just dump my top-off into my tank (a 20L), sometimes on top of my tort, sometimes on top of other SPS, and I don't have any problems.
