blind clown

Anybody ever hear of a clown fish going blind? Heres my story. Got a new anemone and clown bonded instantly. Clown would not get out except for food, then right back in. Sleeps in the darn thing. Suddenly clown stays out of it, and when feeding time comes , he smells the food, but acts like he cant see it and is not eating. Anyone got any advice? Oh, one thing I forgot to mention,he still sleeps in the anemone, but will not put his head down into it anymore like before.

Matt, I couldnt agree with you more, I have had the worst luck with false percs. Ive got other fish in my tank that are supposed to be difficult to raise and I have great success with them. Maybe I just have the curse of Nemo and Dory.

I had a three year old Gold Stripe Maroon go blind. One day I noticed that it was using a different anemone then her favorite and then I noticed she no longer came to the feeding end of the tank. I could put my hand right in front of her and she would not move or strike me as she did in the past to protect the anemone. I tried to feed her but she refused to eat.

After about 3 days she was at the bottom of the tank breathing hard and looking bad so we euthanized her.

Since my wife is a veterinarian we took gill and eye samples and sent them off for histopath. The conclusion was the fish had cataracts but they did not find anything conclusive to describe why she was breathing hard, etc. They said the gills had some inflamation but they could not conclusively say what caused the inflamation like a parasite or bacterial infection. Only this fish was affected, all my other fish were fine.

That's my blind clownfish story.

At the time you could still use the search engine at reef central and I found a few blind clownfish stories and almost all ended up dieing.

 Clown died. After PMs with Matt Im about to conclude that he had Brooks disease. Luckily it has not affected any of my other fish. Never had bad luck with anything but clowns(all bought at LFS) Setting up QT tank for all future fish. Darn Clowns, why do they have to be so cute, just really makes me sick that they are the only unsuccessful thing in my reef.
