Would it be possible to keep birdsnest in a 12g nano under 48w of PC lighting? I've read that they are less needy as far as lighting goes but I'm not sure if that would be pushing it. What do you guys think?
I don't know about nano light to gallon ratios but 48 to 12 is 4 times and in the lower range of keeping SPS in larger tanks. As long as your other parameters are good I'd give it a try. You may want to see if you can get a small frag from someone before you invest in a larger colony. Robert (fish2morow) may still have some.
We have a frag in our 12g nano with the standard lights it came with. It is growing great. We got it at Next Wave, and it has increased in size by about 20%. Lots of extension and just looks really healthy.
Generally the wattage per gallon ratio is not very useful for our purposes. Different lights penetrate the water differently and have different PAR values at different depths. For instance 250W of PCs is no where near the same as 250W of Metal Halides...
Some SPS will do "OK" under just PCs. Birdsnest might work if put up high in the rock work and with plenty of water movement. You may get it to live but I wouldn't expect it to do great or have extremely fast growth under just PCs. There is also the added work of keeping nanos stable which is a requirement for SPS to have a chance.
Thanks for all the replies guys Also-Billy Bob, that is a really really nice offer and definitely more than i expected but I think that I will hold off on trying for now. I've contemplated upgrading to MH lighting so if I do that then I'll try it but for now I'll think about a little longer. If you don't mind I might shoot you a PM for a frag if I upgrade later.
No problem. If it is any help, I kept it under PC's for a while and it did just fine with pretty good growth. It is doing better now under halides though.
Get a frag. It will do better than you think. I had one in a 29gal under PCs (the "growth" bulb was 65 watt daylight), and it grows very quickly. It will probably brown out if it's a pink bird's nest or something, but keeping it and growing it shouldn't be a problem.
