birdsnest

Hello everyone I had a question. I tried to frag my coral and all but two frags survied. The other three bleached white within two days. What would cause this, was I suppost to keep them out of the direct lighting for a day or two. The birdnest is pretty good size,I would like to try again. Thanks for the help
best regards bigk/chris

What is your salinity? What kind of lighting?

couple things to watch for that I suspect may have caused problems with some of my frags

proximity to other species and having to deal with chemical or stinging warfare - space unlike species apart and run carbon

temperature swings - if over 3 degrees a day you could be stressing them

change in flow, low flow or laminar flow

to close to a return nozzle that saturates them with additives - especially magnezium

change in lighting

to small a frag - and the glue seems to kill them off

had one snail seem to want the superglue, the snail died and the coral followed

salinity is at .025. Lighting is 260 watts of pc 2-65w 10,000k/2-65atinic. I have a electronic heater tempure is stable day and nigh. All frags are away from any other corals.

I hate to say it, but I think lighting may be your issue. What size tank is this on? Your lights are fine for most anything, but sps, for the most part, are quite light demanding. There are a few species that would live under pcs, but not many that will thrive. Of course, there will always be those people that have been able to keep whatever with one 40 watt NO flourescent, lol.

I really do think if you really want to keep some SPS, you might wanna upgrade that lighting a bit.

So why is the mother colony and one of the frags doing great? I also have four big pieaces of floresant green monti cap that has done great also.I just cant figure out why I lost the other two frags?
The tank is a 65 gallon it is about 27inches tall. I have huge pieaces of live rock so most of the corals are about11 inches from the lights.I also have always replaced the bulbs about every 7 to 8 months. Im thing to up grade to t5s
Thanks again for everyones help

Your lights aren't the issue. You can keep some of the easier SPS, like Bird's Nest, just fine under PCs. I've kept acro, blue millie, tenius, green slimer, blue tort and other stuff under PCs. You won't necessarily get the color or growth, but you can definitely keep and grow the stuff.

BigK, since the mother colony is still ok, I wonder if it had to do with your fragging process. How did you do it? How did you handle the frags? Did you mount them? Where in the tank did you place them?

Here's my BN under 2x65 watt PC (soon to be upgraded). There's a few dead spots from where an anemone rubbed it last week, but it's already growing back.

**Excuse the pic. I was trying to catch my starfish sneaking across the glass.

Usually you will be fine with your lights. I have VHO's and have a variety of sps....and people tell me that they wont do well in my tank...the only think I have noticed is color and some growth. They tend to grow slower and color is not the same as in a MH tank. I will be upgrading cause I want to get that extra color...but just haven't done it.

So, with your frags...when fragging you coudle have transported bacteria to them pieces and they ended up dieing from that? You really never can tell what they die from? These are delicate creatures...and if anything is off they can die off.

You should trying fraging more. I have fraged quite a bit and have lost a couple here and there but not many.
