Birdsnest losing pigment and Clown acting weird?

Sound's like a alk/ph swing/level issue as you see. You should get it tested at a lfs to see how high it is and also suggest a few larger (35% -40%)water changes spaced over the next few day's. If it's that high I would not wait for it to come down on it's own, your PH has most likely been spiking pretty high as well. Good luck

Cheers,

In my experience that is part of the birdnest dieing off. I had that happen to a frag and when I got my levels back under control, the frag took off again and started branching out from what was left on the alive portions of it. Do your water change, get some more test strips and monitor your levels for a while.

This isn't the problem with the brown algae but I'm worried about the clown not coming out, are you mixing your salt in the water over night or a couple of days. If you mix it up and pour it right in it may be stressing the fish out a bit.
You might want to pick up a RO unit from Melev's. He's in your neighborhood and it pays to buy it from a local reefer, I spent a good bit of time with someone  over the phone at Lowe's trying to get the stuff to make it work but Marc will have what you need.
If you need some help we're around the corner so just PM me. We usually have a barrel of water running so if you've got an emergency it's good to network with those around you.

Yep, that's what I was talking about. I usually let mine mix for 24 hours or more (usually a week).

A good tool to get would be the Milwaukee pH controller. For about $100 you could use it to check your pH easily and later if you got a Calcium Reactor you could then upgrade to an Aqua Controller and use the Milwaukee in the CA reactor to control the CO2.
Or get an Aqua Controller now and it will keep a log of your pH, but it's a bit pricey, and you could rule out the pH or figure out the swings are too great.
I don't like testing pH with kits because they are difficult to read accurately.
