What is bioload?

I have about 10 fishes (5 tangs, 3 chromis, 1 clown, 1 cardinal) in my tank and don't understand why bioload is an issue. I don't seem to have any nitrate or ammonia problems. I plan to add two more tangs into my tank.

What is the big deal with bioload?

Ever watch those tangs poop? IMHO I think you are already more than max'd out on a 80 gal tank.

Edit: Is that right? 80 gal? with 300 lbs LR?

I am confised here. 300lbs of lr in a 80 gallon tank? I can imagine there would be much swimming room left

How big are your fish fully grown or just babies? Thier size does make a difference.

Can we see some pics of your tank?

If you have been there... You would know that it does have 300lbs of live rock packed in that tank of his. said:
I do not doubt it but I would live to see a pic of it. witht that much LR in there he should not have a problem with bio-load. At least I would not think so

Planning to add 4 more tangs in an 80G? It sure is packed in there with rocks, and I would say the problem is with swimming room for the tangs. It's pretty much a big wall of rock from the last time I've seen it.

This allows my tangs to hide from each other. I have a high success rate with blue tangs. I would like to get a school of blue tangs if I could. There are plenty of swimming space for the tangs to swim.

If I do a water change once a week, plus I have 100 astreas, 100 hermit crabs, and other various cleaning crew. I shouldn't have a bioload problem. What I plan to add in my tank in one month is an archilles tang and a purple tang. Then, I also plan to get 2 more blue tangs after that.

I guess I can say that I have 250 lbs of live rock in the display tank and 50 lbs in the sump. I tried to pack as many as I could and couldn't fit the other 100 lbs of live rock. I'll post some pics later tonight.

To each their own......

I have 1 Medium-Large Salfin tang in a 75 and it makes me sad to see him have to back up when he's swimming.

I'm quite interested in seeing the pic of this tank! Do the fish have a chance to swim without bonking against rock or crabs?

I have a hippo in a 110 which is 5 ft long. He is growing so fast it isn't funny. I which he had more tank to swim in. I simply can't image that many tangs (all huge poopers) in a tank of this size. How does one measure success? Guess it's all up to the individual. 3 or more years seems like a good start to me.

The sizes of my tangs are, Naso (5 - 6 in), large blue tang (5 in), med tang (3.5 in), small blue tang (1 in), tiny blue tang (.75 in), 3 chromis (1 to 1.5 inches).

I would like to upgrade my tank to 180 gal but I have a serious addiction where I can't stop spending money on corals and fish. Therefore, an 80 gal tank will help me contain my corals and fish habits.

I probably have to ask my brother to bring his camera over since my camera is not good.

After reading this I am so totally AMAZED that you do not THINK you have TOO MANY fish that are all going to get BIGGER, except for the 3 chromis ALREADY. In addition that you even have the sliightest THOUGHT of adding an additional 4 TANGS. At this point all I can say publically is good grief! I will have to think more before I can respond additionally.

Tri, while I understand your passion for livestock, please consider what you are doing. I had 6 tangs in my 280g reef, and felt like they were too much for the tank. I'm down to three now, and still considering removing one more. Tangs swim for miles every day in the wild, foraging for food. That is one part of Finding Nemo that is accurate, the way Dori swam off into the mist, virtually out of sight.

8 tangs in an 80g is too much. Since you plan to upgrade to a 180g, it is time to stop buying anything else, so you can fund that larger tank. At least this will give your current fish more swimming room, which I know you want to provide. It would be best if you didn't add any more tangs even to the new tank, because they do produce plenty of waste. The six tangs in my tank definitely added to the phosphate issues I was battling for six months.

Btw, it was you that brought up this topic, so don't feel attacked. We care about the livestock's welfare, and speak up if we are concerned. :?

I have a 72 gal and I have 1 firefish, 1 damsel , 1 goby, 3 shrimp, and 2 serpent stars. I am going to give my serpent stars away this coming weekend to reduce my bioload. I have learned early from this board. I would rather have a healthy reef than one where everything is stressed to the max all the time.

Marc,

I don't feel attacked. I welcome the comments from everyone. Yes, I may have too many tangs but, in order to satisfy my addiction, I must have the two tangs I want. I know I need help and I would need to seek counseling. That is why I am seeking help on this forum why bioload is an issue. Please understand that I am not joking and I don't plan to upgrade to a tank because of my bad habits. I have too many corals in that tank, I just can't let go. I plan to add 8 crocea clams with my other two tangs. :?

Even with a 180 gal tank, I would packed that tank with live rocks until there are no room.

There's a difference between livestock 'surviving' and 'thriving'. Just because nothing in your tank is dying, doesn't mean you have a successful reef tank. I won't go off on you like I've seen people do in other forums; it's not my place; but, since you asked: I don't think it's a question of bioload so much as it is you making your livestock miserable so you can have something 'pretty' to look at. I mean, by your logic, if some alien race took you, and put you in a 3' x 3' room, and supplied you with plenty of oxygen, a futon, and multivitamins, you should be just fine. Yeah, you'd survive, but would you be happy? Probably not.
Just my two cents, for whatever it's worth.

All I can say is your taking a very selfish and short term view that I in no way condone. I do hope you will consider more then just your "addiction" in the future.

You sem not to even being considering advice so I won't give any specifically. Sad, Sad situation

I think he's messing with us, to see who'll go ballistic first.
