bio balls

ok. but my nano isnt exactly a jbj it is something else . it has 6 sides to it and the second and third chamber join together at the bottom. can i still put LR rubble in there?

sure the more rubble the better. You could also add a bag of purigem and some floss to help keep it clean but make sure and clean or change the floss reguraly.

Yeah go with live rock rubble, if you can also stuff some micro algea down there if you can get a light for the back. You will have better results with your over all tank.

Good luck

ok ill try to get a little bit tonight im goin to the store, what kind of light do you buy for the back? b/c the light i have covers the whole tank even the back, and goes off at 8:30, and i heard you need a light on all night for the back chamber.

i had the bio balls in my biocube for over 6 months and it did fine but i decided to switch over to some LR, chaeto, and floss and the tank is doing so much better. the corals ive added recently was doing okay before but have expanded a lot ever since the LR switch.

just to let you know you can get submersible lights that can go into the chamber with the chaeto or calupera and no mods nessecary.

How much is a good level of live rock? I've got a 12g nano DX, and am having problems keeping ammonia and nitrates in check, even doing 3g water changes every other week.

It has been a really long time since I've dealt with a small tank. I took advice here and removed the sponges, bioballs, and carbon, and replaced that with about 3" of liverock in the middle chamber. There's also a purigen bag in there.

The first chamber has a nano-skimmer, and the third chamber is just the pump and a heater.

Where can I get a light that will mount across the back if I wanted calurpa? And how deep do you put live rock in there?

Thanks!

How is your tank stocked? How much live rock, live sand, fish, inverts, etc..? If your biological filtration is established, then ammonia should always read 0. Nitrates will build up, but ammonia should always be 0 unless the tank is cycling or a significant amount of waste has been introduced. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

No-not wrong at all. If you are having troubles w/ anything but nitrates then something is wrong. My assumption is that you are in a cycle. Either you didn't finish your first cycle of you had a huge die off that sent you into another.

I run my first chamber filled to the brim w/ live rock. The second is purigen and carbon and the third is just the pump. I do have nitrate problems so I recommend a fuge in the second and the purigen and carbon in the third (i'm working on it). If you do that then your tank should be awesome :D
