Battling the red slime

[Hi all,

Ok for the past month or so I have been battling it out with the red slime. I did have a problem with my ro/di unit and i just replaced all the filters. Yeah the tds was about 4-6ppm. Do i need to do a big water change or is there something else i need to do to get rid of this stuff?]

[More water flow in that area.....less feeding...or feed every other day.....adjust photo peroid....check for phosphates....(red slime feeds on phosphates) do a 20-30% water change...and HOPE! :eyebrows:]

[Geez.. thanks guys. I think it is time to change my bulbs.. i didn't even think about that. I need to look closer at flow as well. The one big area is in a corner and there could be a possible flow issue there. Question what's the max tds level that would not be good to use in a reef tank?]

[When I first started I didn't understand the difference between brown hair algae and cyanobacteria. I'm sill not sure which one is considered red slim (but, I think it's one or the other).

Cyano is bacteria; it occurs naturally you will never be rid of it. But, you can make it hide by increasing flow or things that stir the sand. Hermits are excellent for it but destructive and snail killers. I think there is a nudibranch that eats it...but I don't recommend nudibranches.

If it's brown hair algae pinch off and remove what you can. vaccum remaining and a water change signifigant.

Changing light spectrums is like having your car aligned it's a great thing to do. But, I would put it as a last on the list. Because the environments depend on stability.

That is why when people change their lighting set up they get out breaks.]

[Try to keep TDS under 10ppm if possible. Once you are that high, it is a must to change the filters. Of course 0 is best, but you asked about the maximum level.]

[Wow, I won two in a raffle we had at the frag swap and I have not had any cyano since.
Good luck!]

[Hey Brian.. yes it is cyano bacteria.. the same stuff we had a discussion about a few weeks ago. Well now it's starting to spread to a larger area. The hardest thing is flow. I have a quiet one pump not sure of the gph on it. It's an older model pump. I have it pushing through a swcd out to 2 u-tube returns. I also have a single via aqua 360 in the center of the tank at the back for flow through. Just seems almost impossible to get something that will flow around the whole tank without having alot of pumps cluttering up the tank.]

[Hum.. that works for me. Now i wish i would have waited on the expensive di cartridge now. It really wasn't that high.]
