balanceing the intake with the outtake on an HOB refugium

ok so I bought this HOB refugium off ebay. I really like it because it uses an over flow in order to get the water out of the tank so I have a surface skimmer. However it uses a U-tube to get the water into the refugium and it uses a pump to get the water back into the tank. the problem is that the water is being pumped back into the tank at a faster rate than it is being drawn in.

what should I do? Right now I am planning to go to the store to get something where I can control the flow. does anyone have any other ideas?

What size is the U tube? What volume of water does the pump move? It is quite possible that the pump could pump out more water than the tube could let in. I is the tube full of water, no air bubbles? Did the pump come with the HOB fuge or is it one you already had. If so then can you find the fuge on line and see what size pump it was designed to run with? Rather then restricting the flow of the pump I would suggest a smaller pump or a second tube.
