Baby Maxima Clam

My wife bought it for me yesterday because she found a great deal on it but it's rather small. It's approx 1.5" across. How/when will I know if photosynthesis is enough for it's feeding? If it's not, and I don't have phytoplankton handy, what's the best thing to feed? I have a healthy pod population, but I imagine they're too large.

Also give me some ideas on how to feed. Feed it to the whole tank (primarily SPS, so I can't really risk a lot of pollution), spot feed with turkey baster style, shoot into flow that's heading toward it (will be difficult because of random flow), ect.

I never fed my clams they filter out the nitrates and phos from the tank basically fish poop. Just make sure it is getting enough light

ive heard the 2 inch or 3 or 4 inch things before but cant say anyone particularly creditable. i have heard dr mac say several times they do better with supplimental feeding of phyto to the tank and to not put them in containers if that helps. they can handle lots of light so if it will stay put, higher in the tank will probably help.

Here's the info I've decided. Based a lot of the info from this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/7/inverts#h4

Since I only have 2 fish and a small clean up crew I really feed very little. Only what the fish can eat in 5 minutes... I net out everything I can find after 5 and I do that every other day. I have 0 phosphates (I run chemi-pure elite) and very low nitrates (5% water changes twice a week, nitrates around 10). So I am going to add a little phyto. I'll pull the clam out every other day into a small container and drip 1 drop every little bit right over his mouth for a few minutes totally 1.5ml (the directions suggest 5 to 10ml every other day for 50 gallons. That would mean my tank would usually get 2.5 to 5ml, so I'm still giving less than is called for). I'll let the clam sit for 15 minutes or so and put him back in place about half way down in my system. He should get a little extra food, and so will my SPS, so in general I don't think it's a bad thing. If I don't see new growth on my clam soon I'll change it up.

I would put the maxima on a frag tile to attach itself as they will attach themselves inside your tank. And you will be injuring it every time you have to move it

I'm trying that right now. Woke up this morning and he had moved off of it. Thanks for the link too. I found that yesterday and actually messaged marc for his advice too. My choice is basically a combination of all the info I checked into.

Thanks ya'll.

So after a few days of taking the clam out and feeding him he just didn't seem happy. Wouldn't attach to the plug, was moving all over... had knocked himself over several times and was starting to discolor and not stick his mantle out as far. I knew I had to change it up so I just put him in the spot I wanted him to eventually go and spot feed him just a little bit of phyto, in the tank, with all pumps off, every other day. It's been three days and he already looks much better. Mantle out, he is colored up again and I feel like he's going to attach soon and be just fine. I wasn't able to set up as nice of a holding cube for my clam for him to barely notice being moved to feed, so I think me moving him was stressing him too much.
