Okay, I'm taking the plunge with this product. I read the reviews on MarineDepot and it is pretty scary if you go by the various consumer inputs on their site (50/50 chance of sucess).

Still, I trust Boomer from Reef Central and he told me it would work.

While visiting Dave today, we tested a water sample with his LaMotte kit to see if my Salifert kit was accurate. Looks like it is. For a long time, I thought my nitrates were low, but it turns out they are much higher, like 50 to 60ppm.

AZNO3 purports to remove nitrates over 30 days, and today was the first dose. 2 drops per 60g, so I put in 10 drops. Tomorrow the tank gets 20 drops.

I'll update this thread over the next month.

Marc,
I've used it before but couldn't get the nitrate level down to 0, may be I stopped dosing too soon. I'll try it again if you get good results.
Thanks.

Marc just to be clear are you saying that you measured 50 to 60ppm with the Salifert kit? That is the kit that I use and the last time that I measured my nitrates the color did not change. Last year it was running from 10 to 20ppm with the Salifert kit. Guess I will test it again in the morning.

Yes, my Salifert kit indicates I'm around 50ppm or more. Dave's LaMotte kit confirmed my suspicions.

Imagine if I got the nitrates down: My corals would freakin' grow like Blide's!

When I was at MACNA, a vendor almost had me convinced to use their product to lower my nitrates. I ran into Boomer a few seconds later, who's one of the RC chemistry wizards and I 'sicked' him on their booth to find out if it was legit.

He came back and told me that there was no way it would work, but when I suggested my alternate plan to use AZNO3, he told me it would work. So here I am, taking one for the MAS.

I'm a little worried, but I do need to get them down. While I know many of you are scratching your heads wondering how I ever let them get that high, all I can say is I was misreading the test (as well as the fact that the kit was very old). I thought you were supposed to look through the side of the beaker and divide by 10, so that would me they were 7.5 ppm. For the record:

When using Salifert's Nitrate kit - if the color matches 10 or less, read through the beaker sideways and divide by 10. If it is darker than 10, read it by looking at the beaker from above.

It happens... what I find surprising is that with such a big sump/refuge, a DSB AND a huge skimmer, you still have that problem. Unless you're feeding Spock a lb of Nori a day......

How often do you cull your macros?

Here are the test results from both our tanks this morning.

The 200 Gal SPS tank read 0 to 0.1ppm. (Hard to detect any color change even on the low range)

The 75 Gal LPS/Soft tank read 10ppm. (Color changed right away and got darker as the 3 min mark was reached)

Note: Our 75 gal tank has always run at 10ppm and water changes and other things tried had no affect. The corals are showing good growth and there does not seem to be any negative affect with the fish. Both tanks are feed the same foods and the filters are similar. My conclusion is that it must be OK.

Be careful of a quick fix.

AZNO3 isn't a quick fix. It is designed to take them down over 30 days, and you even have to wean the tank off the stuff once the levels are achieved.

I dosed 20 drops today, and will dose 20 again tomorrow. I was supposed to dose 40 tomorrow, but I'm going to do this slowly.

I just read on RC that by maintaining high levels of alkalinity, corals can better tolerate high nitrate. My alk is usually 10 dKH or higher.

Rick, I have a hard time not feeding a lot, but it usually is gone in under 5 minutes. The 'cloud' I mentioned is more of a description rather than a reality.

wow, new stuff! always fun and a little nerve wrecking, good luck...and here to think im still nervous with doing kalk for the first time...lol...i have a lot to learn and a long way to go...

 I'll use this stuff and I'll use Prodibio, but won't trust kalkwasser. Go figure.

Not trying to sidetrack your thread, but just curious why you're trying this instead of a simple RDSB?

My NO3 PLUMMETED from the 50-60+ range to under 5 in around a month or two when I brought the 55g gallon refuguim with deep DSB online, and has stayed there for ~2 years now...

(And yeah, I'm rather generous with feeding my system too...)

Where would I put it? The fishroom is full. I have a DSB in my reef as it is.

You can always find room for one more 5 gallon bucket! Put some uniseals in it, fill it 4/5 full of sand, and there ya' go!

I've got what I thought was a DSB in my display too, but it wasn't 'till I brought up the REAL DSB in that fuge (7-9 inches deep) that I got some serious results...

Anyway, as I said not trying to sidetrack your "My experiences with AZNO3" thread into a "Ways to lower nitrates" thread, so I'll shut up... for now...

I'll just have you come over and help me schlep some water change water, okay?
