ASM G3 and Sedra 5000

Sorry if this has been asked already -

Could someone comment on how loud these skimmers are? also if they think the Sedra pumps are good? - I had read some negative comments on the Sedra pumps- I'm Looking to buy a skimmer and the ASM Skimmers seem to be highly recommended -

thx-
:D

The pumps are of average quality and unbeatable for the price!

They aren't quiet but not loud either. A hum is noticeable but not if you close the cabinet.

We just recently purchased a skimmer from www.myreefcreations.com. They make very good skimmers which is working great for our 560 gal tank.

If you do decide to go with the MR2, you can get a second becket injector to create more bubbles. You will need a MAG 18 pump to run this skimmer. I always had a hard time adjusting ASM skimmer.

Thx-

Good to hear the Sedra are good a value to money..

The MRC skimmers look good.. out of my budget unfortunately...

I have a Euro-Reef skimmer with two Sedra 5000 pumps, and it runs great. No regrets. Silent over all, though the sound of the actiivity within the skimmer resonates a tad.

I also have an ASM G-3, but haven't started it up yet officially. During its cleaning two weeks ago, it ran quietly but it was outdoors in a vat full of water & acid. The noise was water pouring everywhere rather than the skimmer making a racket. Once it is set up cooking live rock in a bin, I'll know if it is really quiet or not, but I have a feeling it really is going to be acceptable.

I have a g-3 and my tank is in our bedroom
It is a tad noisy
I think the pump resonates up through the skimmer body
I am looking for a piece of silicone tubing to isolate
The pump from the skimmer body like they do the bubble king skimmer / reef devil pumps
I think that would solve the noise issue

I bought it as a back up skimmer, and plan to use it to cook liverock or to run a prop system. At the same time, the pump itself is my backup pump & impellar for either of the other two Sedra 5000 on the Euro-Reef 12-2. I was going to order an impellar assembly just to have on hand, and that part alone was $75. It was only while I was cleaning the skimmer that I realized I now had the backup I desired specifically. :D

I don't have enough experience to comment on the overall noise issue. I've only gotten my G3 up and running last night. I can tell you though that The number of fine bubbles and foam it has been creating is very impressive. This skimmer is definitely a good value IMO. I purchased it from http://www.asmskimmer.com along with the gate valve mod. They probably charge a nice markup on that mod, but I couldn't locate the right gate valve quickly.

Peter...

I really like my ASM G3. You need the gate valve mod. It's too hard to adjust without it. I got everything for the mod at True Value Hardware on Precinct Line in Hurst. All True Value's, Ace, & Elliott's will have it. I think it cost me around $15 for everything. It makes a huge difference. It's very simple to do. You don't have to glue anything together. I used teflon tape. Just put it together like a puzzle. Another plus is that you get rid of the sponge that comes with the skimmer. The only thing I did different was put a PVC cap on the stand pipe and drilled a hole in it, not shown in picture. It was a little noisy without it.

Many thx for all the feedback-

The info on the gate valve mod is very helpful - I couldn't seem
to find anything on it- I'm think I may go ahead and get the G3 -
and do the mod -

Seems like the mod for the external waste collector would be useful
as well

I've had the G3 with the SEDRA5000 for about a year. There is only a slight hum through my pier and beam flooring. The pump has successfully restart following a handful of power outages. I don't have any significant resonance through my skimmer. BUT, definitely go with the gate valve mod!!!!!!.

Later, James.

The gate valve makes it easy to adjust without moving the tube up and down. Also, running the pipe back down towards the water lessens the noise substantially.

I've been using an ASM G-5 for a year and a half or so...it's been great and very reliable. I clean the pumps out every 6 months or so.
