Aquariums on carpet

All my aquariums are not on carpeted areas however I am considering moving to a place that has thick carpet. My brother is telling me to put down a board with flooring material and then set the stand on that on top of the carpet.

What do you all think?

mine has always been on carpet. I just place pink foam insulation sheet on top of the stand to cushion the tank. Also, it levels the tank.

I would put in on the carpet, and shim it as necessary.

Mine is all wood and the part that sits on the carpet is a wood sheet. What does the bottom of the stand consist of? Do you you have a steel stand? Feet? Etc..

The stands are all standard wood stands either 1" or 2" material as a frame. They are all open (no bottom) except for one.

I don't spill as much water as I used to so they may work fine as long as I get them leveled.

I don't know. Now I am thinking I need to build a tray for the stand to sit in. Put plywood on top of the carpet and trim edges with 1" wood. Then set the stand inside the tray. This would contain most small mishaps like drips from my arms.

Or is this stupid?

I would not lay plywood on carpet, some water will get there and won't be able to evaporate you want some air space under your tank and the carpets, legs can touch but don't have more than 12" of covered carpet or you will move your tank one day to find a massive mold/mildew mess.

I dunno... I pulled my carpet out of my tank area and went with ceramic/stone tile when I put my 300 in and thank god I did. When I pulled the old carpet up that was under my 140 it was a mess.

If I wanted or needed to have a stand on carpet again, either I would do metal stands with good feet and space underneath to allow drying and vaccuming... or I would build a platform either out of wood or metal to set the stands on that was a few inches high off the carpet. You also want it off the wall by quite a bit so you can get behind freely and keep splash off the walls.

The bottom line is, no matter what you put down, if you have a big leak there will be a big stain. If you don't want a stain in the carpet, put down and big drip pan or change the carpet.
