Aquafuge leak floods house while absent for 2 weeks

I walked in and went straight to check on my fish. Then I heard my feet hitting water. I noticed that the water level in my tank was down about 4 inches, my tank is full of algae, my automatic feeder got saltwater on it and dumped all the food in the tank and the food was all fuzzy on the sand. Next I notice most of my snails dead. Finally I am able to locate 3 of my fish and one shrimp.

I found out that I had put too much weight on the fittings that go into and out of the Aquafuge by hanging the unit on the back of the aquarium and that they were leaking. I ended up supporting the Aquafuge on its own by placing boards under it so now there is now pressure on those fittings.

I have an LFS service who later told me he had unplugged everything and mopped most of the water up. He spent two hours cleaning. I was lucky that he had done that and that the aquarium is in my kitchen on the vinyl floor.

I had the unit running for a month before without incident. I guess Murphy's Law applies always.

Sorry to hear about the mess. :( I've never felt comfortable with the HOB refugiums, which people have requested from me in the past. I'm sure there is a strong way to make one, but it just seems risky, so I've declined every time.

It'll be an uphill battle getting the tank in shape with all the food that was dumped in. What are the tank parameters?

The parameter farthest off was salinity. Because of the leak the water level dropped and my ATO pumped 5 gallons of fresh water into the 20 gallon display. I am pretty sure this is what killed most of my snails. The zoanthids closed. I will have to raise salinity slowly and check the other parameters.

I thought I would post an update. It turns out that the return fitting broke right at the glass, meaning all the threads broke off of the return fitting. I have never seen PVC do that and I have done a lot of PVC work. Just lucky I guess.

Currently I have the refugium sitting on its own wooden platform so no weight is on the tank or the fittings. With a platform like this I don't think this is all that different from a sump. I still get water all over. Just messy I guess.

Putting a platform under it is a very good idea. That way you don't stress the fittings.
