I saw somewhere these are bad cause they are out of balance. Any input is appreciated...

Mg - 1410
Alk - 11.8 Dkh
Ca - 425

Thanks,
Ben

Thanks for the feedback.

I overshot a little bit trying to make up for the lack of Mg in Reef Crystals lately.

Alk is higher than I prefer or recommend too, but not way off. Highest I recommend is 9.5 but some folks go as high as 11.5 without problems.

Hey Dave,

What salt do you use? Reef Crystals comes out of the bucket around 11 or 12.

Thanks,
Ben

I have been using ReefCrystals for 3 plus years and it always has been around 9 dkh. You are getting 11 or 12 dkh?"]

Rick,

Have you seen any of the threads on RC about the recent problems with their params? Please check out the Chemistry forum.

Ben

I noticed the discussions about the alkalinity test kits, but nothing about Reef Crystals salt being that high.

Here are a few threads for you to look at:

These are all in reference to problems with Reef Crystals chemisty.

Also,

Here are some test results someone did on RC for a bunch of different salts:

Calcium Alk Mag

Instant Ocean 350 12 1070
Coralife 560 9 1380
Oceanic 580 8.5 1650
Aquatic Gardens (Petco) 430 8 1240
Red Sea 400 8 1300
Seachem Reef Salt 540 10 1450
Kent 540 11 1200
Tropic Marin 375 10 1230
Tropic Marine Pro Reef 450 8.5 1380
Reef Crystals (used to be) 420 12 1260

I have read several of them before. The testing procedures and the various test kits lead me to question a lot of those thread remarks. I know you have to use more than a 1/2 cup of salt to achieve the proper salinity to base the readings against nsw. And with the varied readings lately I have seen with test kits, who knows where all the different readings actually are coming from.

Hey Rick,

Your questions are the same ones that many people had (including myself). The fact of the matter is I, as well as others, have sent salt to the manufacturer to have them verify the resutls. They in fact confirmed the salt is low in Ca and Mg and high in Alk. As a matter of fact they are sending me a replacement bucket of salt to rectify the issue. In addition, Drs Foster and Smith are also sending out replacement buckets...

I personally spoke with the Quality Control Manager at Aquarium Systems about this issue. I can assure you... there really was a problem. I still have 2 of the buckets in question at my house if you'd like to come test them for yourself.
