anyone switched a tank from fresh to salt?

I have a thirty gallon tank i was thinking of switching to saltwater if i can. was wondering if anyone has done this and what you would recommend to do. also im planining on having a few fish but probably alot of coral in the tank and was wondering what kind of lighting i would need. the tank is 30 inches wide and around 24 inches tall.

Thanks, chris

I think about everyone in the club has switched a fresh tank to SW.
You should start with a good HOB skimmer, unless you plan on a sump. I would look into either a single 175/250 halide or some T5's. I don't really like PC lighting. You will aslo need to locate about 30 or so pounds of live rock. I would skip the sand in a tank this small. You can use your heater from your FW setup. Depending on your lighting choice, you may need some fans to cool the tank. Also start with fresh RODI water, don't use tapwater.

now see i would prefer the PC due to size -heat and all that stuff.... unless lots of hard corals.. then depends on room size also... i am in a 9x10 room with computers and tv etc.

Not me. I've never had a freshwater tank.

dameono4, have you ever used any chemicals or medications in your tank? If so, it may not be possible to switch using that tank.

This would be your only issue. Otherwise no problems. For lighting I would suggest to go ahead and gow with a 175 pendant and run a 13k or 20k bulb. You will be able to keep whatever you want then. Plus it will be much cheaper replacing 1 MH bulb once a year then 4 PCs or T5s every six months and the $ per PAR is better on the original investment anyway.

Get a remora HOB or a Bermuda (we saw these at MACNA and they were impressive.

Then your off. It's an expensive hobby though. Much much more so then freshwater. A factor of at least 10.
