anyone have an RO membrane to borrow?

like title states, my RO/DI has been out for quite sometime and my stupid self has just been buying water from the water mill and I'm gettin tired of it. I tried to trouble shoot it and couldn't figure it out but I think its my RO membrane that is clogged or prematurely bad. I turn it on and nothing comes out of the good water hose but it all runs out of the waste water hose. Even when I close the valve on the waste water all the way, I get about a drop every 5 seconds out of the good water. I don't want to buy another membrane and it not be the problem so all I am asking is if I can just borrow one for a day or even an hour or something it would be appreciated. I have the unit from ebay--devoneb or something. All I am going to do is slip it in my RO chamber and turn on RO/DI, if it works I will take it out and deliver it back depending on the time of day it is.

Johnny, pull out the membrane from its housing and soak it in white vinegar and water. 50/50 mixture. Let it soak for a few hours, then try it out again. If water comes out of it, it was simply clogged up (and done).

Hi,

Here's a good article on filter sterilization and troubleshooting ro/di issues. :)

Cheers!

Marc--thanks for the response. I will try that tonight, gee I didn't know vinegar has that many uses. I will read that article and see what I can come up with. I have honestly tried alot of things and was about to just buy a whole new system because I was tired of sitting there troubleshooting this and that. Its also hooked up behing my washing machine in the wash room so I am either on top of the washing machine or behind it cramped. Shoulda thought more about where I mount it eh?

Mine is over the dryer, so I understand. That is fine except when something is obviously wrong. If I have to work on it like you seem to be, I'd unhook it from the wall and put it on a towel on the dryer. Be careful not to let it fall over and break something.

They aren't so high-tech that they can't be fixed. Yours isn't that old that it would need to be replaced necessarily, but they are so cheap (the ebay ones) that it almost is easier to get a new one and save all the stuff from the old one for spare parts in case you break, drop or lose something.

I try not to break anything, but the part in question is the RO membrane. Lots of members of this board and RC say that their membranes are good for a year or so, at least. Mine last tops 2 or 3 months I think which didn't make any sense. Is fort worth water that dirty that it would clog it up that quick?

Johnny, the filters under the the RO unit are good for roughly 6 months, but perhaps less if you water is especially poor quality. I live and use Ft Worth water and the TDS is 172 out of the faucet. I change the filters every 6 months.

I've been using the same membrane for over 4 years and so far it is still working as it should. Whomever is telling you membranes are good for a year is feeding you bad information. Check with any RO/DI vendor to find out the facts.
