Any salt makers out there?

Just curious how many people make their own salt water. With my large tank, and with a small RO/DI system which I use for 'top off', I buy my own at 95 cents a gallon....Tropic Marin of course

Does it get a little expensive buying this IF you change water frequently?....well, sort of. But I wonder IF it's worth the 'hassle'(?) of making your own and storing it. I've gotten in the habit of changing 20 gallons a week in a 250 gallon tank.

Do you save a lot of money making it your own?....Curious.. :?: ..

Thanks for any responses....

yeah it saves you money....if you pay .95 and get 20 gallons that is $76 a month...that is almost the price of 2 big bucket of coral sea pro...It is a good idea to have some mixed and stored just in case you have an emergency

Howdy,
I used to buy mine also until I did the math. You can find Red Sea Pro salt rountinely for ~$35(makes 175G) (you already have a ro/di unit), buy a container that hold's roughly 30 gallons, a small pump to mix the water with and your are good to go. Compare that to ~$20 a week for water, factor in your time and gas to get the water and lug it inside......To really make a point, what happens if something happens late night and you need to do an emergency water change.... Bottom line is.....you should make your own water, you know the quality of the water, it's alway's on hand and its much more economical.

Cheers,

Sure seems to make sense to me. Does anybody know a place 'locally' that sells large containers....maybe 100-200 gallon size to hold the water?I have a perfect place for it here at home. Sounds like, maybe, a farm supply store might carry something like this. There's got to be places, either locally or by mail order, that sell large 'vats' to store water.

Suggestions? Thanks.

I make my water in 32 gal trash cans from home depot. They also sell the dollys that go on the bottom, so it makes it easy to wheel from the garage to the tank for the water change. I have three of these, one for
ro/di water, one for salt water, and the last one for doing the water change. Works great for me, and i change 30 gal every 2 - 3 weeks.

Tractor Supply will have large container. But you will then have to figure a way to keep it covered. You do not want dust and stuff to get into it. I would recommend that you stop by Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a couple Brute 32 Gallon or bigger trash cans. They work great. Also get the wheels that lock on the bottom.

My company sells them I bought 2 for my home. there 65gal each I have 1 holding R/O and the other mixed with salt.

Depending on how many gallons your looking for. We have them from 65gal ( pictured ) to 6500gal.

65gal - Dia 23" x H 38" - Drain 1 1/4 about ( $110 w/txs )
165gal 31" 55" 2"
300gal 35" 78" 2"
( bulkheads included )
* No shut off valve

There not the cheapest in the world but I like the lid on top and the drain makes it easy to do water changes.

No , the company I work for is Wholesale so they dont offer any kind of discounts / group buys. We sell to retailers like Tractor Supply and really only sell to them. Wish I could do better on price but sometime even Tractor Supply sells them cheaper when they buy from other suppliers.

Hmmm ... two of those (one ro/di the other salt) plumbed and with a couple pumps and switches would be nice for automated water changes.

Off to do some planning. :D

I'm looking for one around 100-200 gallon in size. Pretty large. Would Tractor Supply have these in stock OR would they have to order it?

They should have them on hand. I only keep these sizes at the moment listed above. You can call them and they will give you a price. They have stores all over the place or even a Tractor Dealership but I doubt they stock the tanks.

I'm in Southeast Dallas ( Pleasent Grove / Mesquite ) I-30 East / 635 South.

here's both side by side.

I've got a container for sale... I believe its 65gallons. Same size as those blue ones but mines clear/whiteish.

$30.00???

I'm trying to find one around 100 gallons and 'fairly' narrow, but tall! I've seen a couple doing a Google Search that look pretty good and MAY ending up ordering one. The shipping is always a killer, but at least there's NO tax. Problem on my end is is that it needs to be TALL, and not wide. Most of the ones I've seen around here at the Farm Supply 'stores' tend to be more wide than tall.

Thanks for the pictures. That's basically what I want....but taller in nature.

You might also check down in Houston. Every time we head down there I see holding tanks of every shape, size and orientation. I think the largest ones I've seen were about 2000 Gal (about 8 of them would fill my POOL)
the average sizes I've seen were between 50-200 gal capacity.
