Another quarantine tank question.

I have my QT setup and running in preparation of buying a new fish from a LFS. It is using a HOB Aqua Clear power filter. The question I have is..

The foam filter and ceramic beads have been in my main tanks sump for two weeks now. How long should they stay there, before they have enough bacteria on them to provide good filtering for my QT. Also I know the LFS sells bateria in a bottle, should I/could I use this. If so, how?

BTW: My QT is 29gal, and I have filled it with my changed water from my main tank.

Any help with this is appreciated.
Thx

I'd say two weeks is enough.. just watch the ammonia in the 29g when you put the fish in, and be ready with a water change.

Thanks for the help.. I am just trying to be a responsible reefer...

If two weeks should be enough - it will be actually be 3 weeks next week and thats when I plain to go and get a fish. Also I had a brainstorm last night - just to aid the filtration I am going to prune my chaeto and put some in a basket, and put that in there too. I have been known to be a very cautious person. :)

Once again thanks for the advice,

That is my biggest issue with QT. I always have high ammonia spikes.

Chuck,

I just leave my QT up and running. It cycled a long time ago. I have never had amo readings since, even during hypo. I run a emperor 280 (bio wheel).

737mech,

I plan to leave mine up 24/7 also (you never know, you may need a QT at a blink of an eye). I'm just starting out - and trying to get it setup.

How do you keep your filters alive with bacteria, when nothing is in QT? Do you keep them in your QT and feed it shrimp or something, or pull them out and put them in your sump?

I'm a bit lax.. anywhere from every other day to twice week. If I know that I've got fish incoming, I feed it a little food daily for a few days and watch to see if any ammonia shows up.
