Another algae question - Is it chestnut brown corraline?

[About the same time my hair algae problem started I had a new form of algae starting to grow.

It is a brownish/red color. Only grows were the purple corraline is growing (black colored back glass, black intakes, and on the LR). On the black glass it is actually growing right over the individual purple corraline spots. Does NOT grow on the sandbed. It has a very slick/slimy feel to it. It is growing just like corraline, but is it corraline?

I have a book that described it as chestnut brown corraline, that's what it looks like to me.

Just curious to what it is, it popped up about a month or two ago.

Thanks again,
MIke]

[I've had a couple of differnt types of coralline - purple as well as a light and a darker green - the greens really showing up when you change your lighting like from NO to VHO or MH.

Never had chestnut brown coralline...but you are an experienced salt water guy and you have coralline growing so I would be mondo surprised if it were diatoms as you usually get that when cycling a new tank and rarely, if ever, after that...maybe cyano? that can look chestnut brown until it gets pretty thick...does it pull off in sheets like old skin from a healing sunburn (eeuuuuwwwwwwww!)? Coralline is just hard as the dickens to get off the glass and stuff so I would use that as tie-breaker question as to whether a slime mold, bacterial growth like cyano, or some other weirdness...]

[I don't think it is to be honest. I had diatoms when I first set the tank up sep-03. This looks nothing like it at all. It is growing exactly like coraline does, in the exact places coraline does. My substrate is pristine white. I do not have the fine overspray look that I had when I did have diatoms early on. This stuff is individual circles, nickel and quarter size that only grows where the purple stuff is.

I am trying to convince my self that it is coraline...

"if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck"

Know what I mean?

Thanks,

[Since I started reefing I can't afford anything else!

I might try this weekend to take some pictures with the neighbors digital camera.]

[I once experienced Dino algae out break. It is brownish and grow on live rocks, on the back glass, cover the overflow box, and tubing but not on sand. It is slimmy looking and soon the beautiful live rock with coralline algae will turn grayish and dard reddish color. Nothing you can do about it but let it run through its course and siphon it out later. As far as what causes it, I believe it just a natural things in salt water aquarium.

Hope this helps,]

[I tried to get it off of return tube just to see what it was. Does not come off. Scrubbed it with an algae pad, does not come off.

looks like a duck, flys like a duck...

When I had diatoms...they can right off.

I had purple coraline on the same tube, scrubbed it, did not come off.

Thanks again,
Mike]

[Hmmm I have heard of this and IIRC it was some kind of hard encrusting sponge, kindof odd I thought. Anywho I know that isnt helpful, but I will go back to the source and do some reading to see what I can come up with.]
