Anemone splitting - Read bottom first

[Think for a moment that often after Locusts are sprayed they lay and fertilize eggs so there can be a next generation... then die. It is the nature of every animal (in dieing) to reproduce.

From my reading all anemones are capable of sexual reproduction. But, only certain ones can clone.

Do you think it is likely that our anemones clone to "continue" the species or because conditions present in your tank allow that to happen?]

[Brian, I think you should host your own reef talk show. You come up with really good discussions. So are you asking if the animal feels its in danger and must start reproduction or it feels the environment around it is perfect for reproduction?]

[Pretty close. I've heard of people's anemones splitting in not the best of conditions. Later to only die. It lead me to a conclusion that while I believe a Anemone can split because of good water parameters being fed regualrly it can split to try and survive!

I am asking does anyone here honestly believe the only reason an anemone splits is because good water parameters?]

[I think anemones split or various reasons. Peter's rose anemone has split multiple times...and I don't think there is any question that Peter has excellent conditions. An anemone of mine split because my pair of large Sebae clows were pounded the heck out of it...so in that case it might have been trying to continue the species during a time of stress.]

[This is just what my LTA did while I was on vacation. I left the halides off for three days to help with evaporation and did not feed the tank. When I returned it had split completly. So I would guess it was stressed and thought it should split to continue it's species.

[Matt - My split 3 times in the last 2 years. I can say in all cases the anemone split because it was stressed. First time when I was on vacation - it was not fed regularly. Second time it split because I took the rock out of water, expose anemone to air. Third time I was rearranging rock, tunze stream kick off all the detritus and the tank water was cloudy most of the day. Otherwise, when the anemone is happy, the size of it just keep getting bigger and bigger.]

[there's a post I read on point - they say to get an anemone to split - don't feed it for a while - 7 days -then do a water change - doesn't do the trick every time - but it seems to work well for some. So it appears to be stress related.]

[Yes, I've read that as well. Mine split into 6 separate anemones over a long period. It took over 2 months for it to be 4 pieces, one of which died.

Then in the new tank upgrade, it split two more times due to new lighting, new current, and new livestock. I only have 3 in the tank of all these splits, as the others just disappeared for no reason at all. They'd not eat, and die no matter what I tried.

In a way, it is amazing. I've had the BTA for 2.5 years now, and having 3 after all that time is pretty nice. I target feed them about 2x a week, with a piece of shrimp and make sure the food isn't stolen.]

["Continue" the species 7 [46.67%]
Right conditions 3 [20.00%]
I don't know 5 [33.33%]

Thanks for that post Marc, I think your issue really highlights the point!

Has anyone ever had two in a tank make a baby or heard of one for that matter?]
