Amquel does it work?

I just moved my 29 gallon reef into a new 80 gallon tank...I added the old substrate to the new...thinking that the biological filter would stay intact...i was wrong.....my ammonia levels have jumped to well over 0.8. in a panic i decided to use amquel untill i can get to the LFS and get some premixed water to do a hefty water change...do any of you have experience with with amquel? or do you have any other ideas to keep me from going toxic?

thanks for your help
Darren

Yes, Amquel (or even better Amquel plus) does work, but it will also irritate leathers, xenia, and anemones.

I had my wife add some while I was out of town on work for three weeks and my nitrates spiked. It took about three days for them to get over it.

Actually i did use the Amquel plus...my only concern with that is when it alters the ammonia to the new chemical is the bacteria still able to process it? will it distroy my filter bed all togetherfrom a lack of food for the bacteria. also when i test after using it the test reads the same...is it reading the new compound as ammonia...

thanks again

My bacterial population didn't seem to suffer, so I doubt it binds to all ammonia.

When we used it, the nitrates did test lower afterward, so I'm not sure about your situation. (It was about 4 hours after the treatment when we tested.)

thanks for your help.
I tested 8 hours after the first application and the readings were the same...things did look a little perker this morning though :)

Could you have something decomposing in the tank? (Something that could have released more ammonia?) Done a head count on your critters?

Did you have the LR out of the water for any significant amount of time? Got any pretty sponges on them?

Is there a skimmer on the tank? That always helps tremendously.

I've used Amquel Plus with great results! My tank crashed due to too much ammonia in the tank from FtW Water, and Amquel was used in addition to LFS water changes. Took about a week, but things settled. (I had .25 ammonia!)

all is accounted for in the critter department...the rock was lifted out of one tank and placed directly into the other....just a small amout of the yellow sponge on one rock not enought to cause a large ammonia spike.
I also dosed with a capful of vodka to help the bacteria reproduce.

yes the tank has a great skimmer on it...and it is producing a cupful a day.
it is good to hear that amquel does work....did it cause the test result in a lover reading for you Kitty? or did it still show as the original reading...btw i am using a fast test reagent...

My test readings stayed the same until the next day.

I added Amquel one day, waited a day, then did a water change of 20%. Then next day, added Amquel, waited a day, did a water change. Kept that up for about 8 days. On the 9th day, readings were just about zero.

Of course, by that time, most of the tank was gone anyway
I had a stong-time-coming dominoe effect going.

oh wow! sorry to here that.....everything is looking ok at this point but they were only exposed to it for about 12 hours before I caught it.
the maint things i am worried about are my acros. but they had some polyp extention this morning.
i am keeping my fingers crossed
