Alk buffer

Does anyone know if the Alkalinity buffer you can buy in a LFS is the same as the Alk up you would put in a swimming pool?

I know that the pool version is sodium bicarbonate, just not sure if the aquarium version is the same chemical make-up.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

If Sodium BiCarb is Baking Soda... then yes it is. I believe (and I am not an expert) that most Alk additives are Baking Soda based, either 'baked'/Ash or raw solutions. Where I would be concerned is if there is anything additional the pool supply manufacturer added to the product.

Depends on the buffer.. the 'proper ph x.x' line of additives is a combination of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, in a ratio to try to bring ph to the x.x point. Kent super buffer dkh is sodium carbonate, according to some.

The big question with the pool hardness additives is what other contaminants are in it. The same question that comes up about dowflake / magflake and impurities is valid concerning pool additives.
