Algae Problem

Lately i've been getting a algae blooom but its the reddish color one that

have small bubbles on them. Any tips on how to get rid of it

sounds more like cyano bacteria, not a true algae rather a predicessor in the evolutionary chain, kind of half bacteria half algae.

most algae eaters won't touch it

usualy the normal fix to it includes:
feeding less
shorten the duration of your "lights on"
increase flow in the areas where its growing

or you can nuc it wwith chemi clean -
Marc has used it and endorses it (I hope)

personally, ive used chemi clean twice and it didnt even look like it did anything to my cyano. I dont know if it is just me but i dont like it. BUT my water is clear after i use it, just the cyano is still there. you get what i mean?

thanks for the advice.

I siphon out the cyano, but its just temporary. The tank looks clean for about

a week, and after that the cyano slowly grows back again.

If its new... less then 1 year, then you will have the problem. It's just a natural progression to having a mature tank. I would also check to see if you have enough waer flow in that particular area. That will help somewhat to keep it from attaching to the sand/rock in the area.

If you can give some input as to your tank parameters... that will also help too.

I'm kinda a newbie too...but I had a bout with the Red Slime.

I added some Chemiclean to get rid of mine. Make sure you turn off your filters before you add this, or else they will remove it from your tank before it can do its job. I kept mine off for 24 hours while it did its work. After 24 hours, i turned them on for 24 hours. After that 24 hours (48 hours from the time i added it) I did a 25% water change. I haven't seen it since (about 3 weeks now)

Hope this helps.

so the chemiclean chemical turn out to be a success huh? I think i might give

it a try and see how that would turn out. Do the red slimy cyano end up

falling into the sandbed after you applied the chemical treatment?

Actually, my red slime cyano was on the sandbed. after 12 hours, it started to fade. after 48, it was 100% gone. I was kinda amazed, actually. No normal things work as advertised...except this. (That and Joe's Juice)

Hi,
It's so easy to just dump chemical's in to "fix" problem's, isn't it. Just keep in mind that if you don't take the time to understand the reason why cyano is appearing, then you will be battling this problem again and again.
Have you tried feeding less, adjusting your flow so that there is some across the sandbed, adjusting your clean-up crew, is your skimmer doing a good enough job etc. etc. I would try to pinpoint the root cause of the Cyanobacteria before I would add any chemical's to my tank..... it will kill off a bit of beneficial bacteria as well. Here's some good reading if you have time. http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/microalgae/a/aa092800.htm

Cheers!
