AIPTASIA-X

I think I have some great news. I read on RC about a product called Aiptasia-x. I decided to try it. It is made by Red Sea and is a new way to kill Aiptasia. I have tried lemon juice, Joes Juice, Vinegar, Calc Paste, Peppermint Shrimp and Berghia Nudibranch. I have not been able to completely get rid of them. I had a few large Aiptasia on some huge base live rock that I couldn't remove to kill them.
I ordered the Aiptasia-x last week and put it to the test today. I put it on the entire oral disc of the aiptasia. They think its food at first and do not withdraw into the rock like they usually do. It glues their mouth closed and they implode  It is very satisfying to watch the little buggers implode! I will update this after a few days to let everyone know if it is a permanent fix, but it looks promising:)

I have it and have used it a couple of times. The jury is still out, but I bought a second bottle while I was in Salt Lake City because the price was excellent.

There is a similar product out there called Aptasia Control. I have used it several times and it works great. I hear the aptasia X has a better applicator. mine just came with a small syringe. What did you think of yours?

Aiptasia-x comes with a syringe that has 2 stainless applicator tips. One is straight and the other curved to get to the hard to reach aiptasia. It is a quality aplicator:) I have been watching my Aiptsia that were treated a few hours ago and they look like melted jelly :D

I wrote a review on it a few months back... and just haven't gotten around to a followup. It does work from time to time, but its not 100%. Seems to work better on the smaller ones, but the larger ones just seem to pull in for a few days or so then pop back up. Also if you happen not to kill it outright, they end up reproducing.

I think its probably just as effective as other products at this point, which means hit or miss. I broke down and went with Berghias last week. I'll probably still hit as many as possible with Aptasia-X in the hopes of getting as many as possible while the little buggers go to work.

I have 2 tanks. A 40b and a 127 tenecor acrylic. I have had great success with peps killing the aiptasia in the 40b, but I can't seam to completely get rid of them in the 127. After treating with the Aiptasia-x, they really didn't look like they retreated to the rocks like they usually do. They look like melted jelly goo. I hope this works.

If you watch closely, many times you can see them implode and a small puff of the stuff will come out of it. I don't know if that means it's dead but it's realy cool to see them blow up. it happens within about 10-15 seconds of application.

The literature on aiptasia-x says that it is a glue which seals their mouth closed which will not allow them to release panula. That is supose to be one of the really cool things about it. It still remains to be seen, but the aiptasia are gone for now:)

I need to get some of this. I have one aptasia in my tank that has survived Kalk, lemon juice, and an angry vigorous scraping with a scalpel.

Now I understand why the guy in that video took a blowtorch to his live rock.

I have one that has a basal disk about 1 3/4" in dia. He doesn't much look like an aiptasia anymore. I am starting to fear for the safety of my chromis.

allhobs,

I have read the same thing about the stuff gluing their mouth shut, but what about when they turn to goo and fall apart. Marc, did any offspring of the ones you killed ever show up?

I never run out of aiptasia. I usually 'feed' them all about every 6 weeks, and then enjoy the peace for a duration. If I did it daily until I saw none, I'd probably resolve the situation once and for all. I'm usually not that motivated.

Bigtex52,
I don't have a good answer to your question yet. It will take a little time before I know for certain the final outcome. I will update this post to keep everyone informed.

Well, my aiptasia are no more. They all imploded last night. I did cover the disks completely with Aiptasia-X as instructed, but a couple of them shot a jet of goo out like a geyser when they imploded. Hope that wasn't a geyser of planulae! :?

I'm using ApX, use to use Kalc paste on Mojano's

They both have pro's and con's

The kalc paste is very effective when the pest is in a vertical position and you can completly cover it. when it pulls in the kalc past comes with it and if enough is applied, it will sterilize the rock from others forming.

Kalc paste is not very effective IMO if you can't get it to stay or cover the base. they just split or grow back from the residual base

ApX is not as effective IMO as a total kill that Kalc paste can be when it stays. But that's where ApX has some advantage. The deep, hard to get to, and horizontal pest (mojoanos, apstasia & other's) will just drop the kalc paste off as they retreat (and often retreat before you can get much on them), but the Apx doesn't create an imediate reacation and sticks.

My kill rate on ApX seems to be over 50%, maybe around 70%. I still see a lot coming back in the same holes they were to start, maybe larger doses of ApX will help.

Here is an update. I think about 40% are dead. No new babies have appeared, but some of the ones I put aiptasia-x on didn't die:( The have come back to life so I covered them with it again. I will update again when I have the results.
