Added Chemi-clean help!!!

I followed the instructions to the T but I am constantly adjusting and emptying the skimmer cup every 30-60 seconds.

What am I doing wrong or am I going to have to sit here for the next 48 hours?

The instructions tell you to turn the skimmer off. It also tells you for how long and to do a large water change after that time. Even after that, your skimmer will take a little while to settle back down.

My instructions tells me to leave skimmer on but if you all had previously done this before, then should I leave it off for at least 48 hours?

Here are the Chemiclean Red Slime instructions:

Directions: Use included level scoop, one per each 10 gallons. After 48 hours, repeat if needed. Must change water (20%) after every treatment. Contents treat 300 gallons.

Important Note: So you do not alter or filter ChemiClean out of your tank, first turn off UV sterilizer and/or Ozonizer and also your Protein Skimmer. Remove ChemiPure or any other Carbon Filtration for 24 hours following each treatment. During treatment maintain tank oxygen levels with airstone or other aerator.

Yeah, that's what I thought as far as the skimmer being on. Funny thing, that's what my wife said too. I bought the Boyds brand at my LFS and those instructions states to "continue use of the protein skimmer, be prepared to adjust as necessary." It is off and will be for the next 48 hours, along with my UV light and GFO/carbon reactor. I am currently preparing more saltwater for the water change.
Thanks for all your advise on this...

Make sure you have more fresh saltwater than just for the water change, as you will need it when the skimmer is turned back on. You can easily skim off several gallons before it gets back to normal. If your skimmer cup has a drain, just run a hose from it to a 5 gallon bucket so you don't have to empty the cup 20 times an hour.

Good thinking Titus. I do have a drain on the skimmer cup so when it's time to turn on, will run a hose to bucket. And yes, I am currently mixing 40 gallons of new SW. I normally do a 10 gallon wc abt twice monthly.

Thanks for your input.

Another trick is to remove the skimmer cup and let the skimmer overflow back into the sump until the level in the skimmer body returns to normal. This will eliminate any risk of flooding if you are at work and noone is there to keep an eye on it.

Cheers,

That's a good idea too, will consider it.

Well, it's been abt 30 hours since the dosing and wow, what a difference. Not looking forward to the wc tomorrow but it is what it is.

Completed a water change today and ran the skimmer again. Skimmer went crazy for about an hour. I drained it into a bucket until it went back to normal. Chemi-clean works great. I know everyone says to follow the instructions but per the instructions that was on the box of the medicine, it stated "may continue to use skimmer." Weird, doesn't make sense to skim out the medicine that you just put in. Over all, tank looks great now. Thanks again for everyones advice...
