Acrylic really that much?!

bryan, i believe you can buy the acrylic at lowes and they will cut it for you. I would make sure you go with 1/4 inch all the way around, 1/8 is not going to do you any good.

I am not sure why they are so high...i called and could get an entire 4x8 sheet of 1/4 inche for around 100 bux.....

If you decide to buy from home depot, you can use my "new" router table to trim them to fit. Let me know.

Either way, you still need to get the weldon

i think it is a form of acrylic. i am not a guru, but i beleive it will work but it will yellow over a time period.

dang, you would be better off purchasing the full sheet of acrylic for under 100 bux and then cutting it to size....i could use some acrylic for a second fuge i am wanting to do but dont need that much....

I see what you are saying, i would just make sure that the plexi will work with the weldon and acrylic. Heck, i would pay the 30 something dollar difference to get the full sheet. I want to build a top off resivor and that might be what i need to do it.

you might want to check if it is cell cast or extruded as well. I believe the ~$91 is cell cast acrylic.

Do not use the Plexiglas, it will not work the same as acrylic, especially when you try to cut it.

I have been buying for Delvies Plastics. They are very competative and as l ong as you stay in the 24" x 48" size the shipping is cheap. www.delviesplastics.com :) said:
Is that the new building on Belt Line between Moore and Denton tap? I've been driving past that for a month now, wondering if it was 'that' kind of plastic place.

acrylic is "softer" than plexiglass, if is more forgiving under stress and better suited for aquarium/sump use. Always ensure that you get acrylic when you go to home improvement stores, if you build a tank out of plexiglass and has high stress points due to inproper joints it is more likely to crack

found this on the net

C'mon bryan....share some pictures of Franken-sump! pics please, let us all appreciate mark's talent......pics

absolutley....could not be as bad as my attempt to make raised panel doors..hahahah. after about 30 trys i was able to make it look like a door.

bryan, why you gotta lie...you didnt buy any weldon, you tried to use milk..blahhhhhhaaahahahahah! Man that thing looks like elsie the cow threw up on it.

j/k, it is not as bad as it could have been. that weldon must be some pretty runny stuff!

The only concern i would have is the return section looks fairly small and i hope you can keep enough water in there.

When gluing with weld-on, you need to keep the seam horizontal. Once one side is glued, let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes. Flip the project and glue the opposing side. You can glue seams vertically, as you noticed. It just runs downhill and pools.

If you leave the sump to cure for a day or two, you can use a propane torch to heat up the runs and puddles to help them turn clear, but if you leave the flame there too long, the acrylic will catch fire and pit / scorch. And a glued seam can suddenly get bubbles from the heat, so be judicious where you heat it and don't try to get it all done in one pass.

Sumps take a while to build because you have to wait for one section to bond before you can flip it. :)

Unless you're going to display the Fuge/sump, I wouldn't worry about the overgluing on it. all in all, it looks pretty decent.
A caveat on Acrylic vs plexiglass...... they are the SAME. Plexiglass is a trademark name of Rohm and Haas for sheet acrylic.
