About to give up on Tangs

Seriously. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The first tang I added was much too young and died, I know what happened there. I'm trying again now...

I've added no fish in months so my tank params are completely perfect. I did a water change before adding a completely healthy almost full grown Kole Tang. I dripped him for about 1.5 hours.. The LFS which I trust had him for 10 days, eating like a horse, fat, no ich.

I add him to my tank yesterday. Of course he's shy. Right? Right.

Well now he's just hiding under one particular ledge and not going far for food. I've soaked nori in garlic and put it nearby. Tonight we'll see if he goes for it... He won't eat the frozen mysis. He ate a couple of live brines only because they were in his face. He didn't venture out for them. I'm really nervous because I can't see if theres anything wrong with him. Last I saw him he looked like he had a bump on his head but perhaps thats discoloration from stress? A poke from my BTA? I know my fish couldn't care less for his existence so...

Why is he so freaking shy and not eating! I'm starting to smell like Garlic from soaking so much food in it. I have to do a water change monday from overfeeding everybody.

I got a cuvier tang from bill at neptunes which i had a similar experience. he wouldnt eat for the first three days then for about 2 weeks would only take small amounts of frozen if i turned off the lights in the room and stepped back. Now after a month or so he eats nori well only after my scopas backs off and frozen even if i have my face planted on the tank. Give it time i bet it will work.

If it's been less than 3 days, I wouldn't worry too much yet. But he'll have to eat soon.

I have a convict tang that was eating good in the LFS. When I got him home, he did the usual hiding thing for the first day. On the second day, he started coming out a little...but not much. It took about a week before he would even eat from the algae clip. He JUST started eating some of the food the other fish are eating last week. I bought him on 29 July...so you could have one of these freak fish like me.

He's scrawny, but at least now he's getting a little protein...so I"m hoping he'll fill out soon. This has been the most challenging fish I've had to date.

It's just so frustrating. He was kind of swimming around with me being around, added the last bit of the live brine and he darted under an overhang and wouldn't come out even though I was peeking from the doorway. He did eat the algae clip though (I think) since there was no algae left on there. Its hard to tell since the puffer goes nuts over it and so do the wrasses.

Just leave him be and keep away from the tank as much as possible. Some are very shy at first...

I have a baby yellow in my 45 and its taken it about 2 weeks to not dart for hiding when I go near the tank.

I soaked a cube of Mysis shrimp for about 20min in garlic... He kept peeking out curiously at me during the beginnings of the feeding process. I dumped the food in, he darted away, and I shot around the corner where he couldn't see me. He ate quite a lot of mysis for his shyness. I managed to go into a better viewing point where he could see me... He didn't hide.

He does have a lighter colored spot at the top of his body, like a bump, at the beginning of his dorsal fin. I hope its just from hitting his head on a rock while sleeping or something scared him..

Other than that his coloration is wonderful. I'm so glad I bought him but still crossing my fingers for his survival. Tomorrow I'm planning a small water change since he increases the bioload and I've been feeding more than normal.

Sounds like he'll be fine he's just getting adjusted. This is one of the main reason i'm a big qt advocate. you get them used to you and eating good before they have to go compete with all those other fish that are already used to you!

I use to have a kole tang and he was very very shy... he came around though..(untill my powder brown got ich which killed all the fish)

Just a little update...

He's doing great. Nice and fat. He's finally coming out into the open at feeding time(s) even though he hides initially. I tend to be noisy anyways... He was out and about grazing earlier while my boyfriend and I were playing with soon to-be sump parts with no problem. I hope soon I can get a good pic but he still hides when I come up close.

Whenever I do manage to sneak a look at him he's absolutely gorgeous. And I've caught him staring at me sometimes so I know he's starting to recognize me. So exciting to finally get a nice tang!
