About to buy a Pistol Shrimp

My son has been wanting on for a while, so finally giving in. Any words of advice or warnings? I have a small Yellow Watchman Goby (about 1.5") that I am hoping to pair him with. Is it hard to get them to pair, or do they do it naturally???

Hopefully easier to get them to pair than it is getting my Clownfish to host an anemone. I have a descent size frogspawn, two headed torch coral, and a small GBTA all in my tank and available, but the only thing my clown attempts to host is my sea apple......

Most pistol shrimp will pair up with a goby in very little time, but there are a few specific types of pistol shrimp that wont pair off.

I loved my pistol/goby pair. I decided to part with the pair though after the shrimp poached my purple firefish, and I was afraid it would get my helfrichi. They will make lots of tunnels, they may not be seen for days, they will take snails that crawl too close, and they are a blast to watch! Make sure your rock work is set so it wont tumble/fall as the shrimp digs its tunnels.

Thanks for the input! I am going to buy pvc pipe to brace my LR and have recently built up to a DSB @ 3", so that should give him plenty of burrow room....I am pretty excited! Just feed him pellets in front of his hole every other day? If he is well fed, that should reduce the risk of him attempting to prey on other livestock, right?

I believe the tiger snapping shrimp is the natural partner for the yellow watchman. I was in your spot and added the tiger to my tank which had my yellow watchman already in it. They hooked up in about 10 minutes. Haven't been apart since. They really are the stars of my tank. Love the behavior.

I have both and they paired within 2 days I have always liked them and wanted one real bad but now that I have had them the pistol shrimp can be a bit of a trouble maker, well what I mean is like they said above lots and lots of tunnels everywere so if you have any corals on the bottom of your tank I suggest picking them up and placeing them somewere else or they will be moved and covered up I lost some corals do to this but your son will get a ton of enjoyment out of waching them dig. make sure your rock is fixed in place have fun

My pistol shrimp has been in captivity for 5 years and been thru about 3 different gobies. They typically connect within a few hours and live together fine.

I added one to my 70. Never saw him after adding him, but I could always hear him...

I feed my tank mostly meatatarian food, and the pistol would sometimes come out to get the mysis. usually my goby would eat and bring some back for the shrimp. IF the goby wasnt fast enough, it was fun to watch the shrimp get mad and just go get his food himself.

So really, the snails had just better stay away from his holes :)
