? about Feather Duster Decrown

Hello im new and I have a problem [smilie=worried.gif] Ok I have had this Feather Duster for about 5 months it is in a nano cube DX I want to say it is 10 gallons well Monday it decrowned but I could still see something in its tube. The tube was filled about 50% after it decrowned. I left it in the tank since it still had something in its tube in hopes that it would be ok. The Feather Duster was purple and white very pretty and large. Well today I came into work (my tank is at work) and it has a orange red thick string coming out of it but when I went to pick it up it started dropping little pieces of the red and orange stuff. I do water changes every other week 25% I had my water tested Monday every thing was fine. I can not show pictures because we are not allowed cameras at my jobsite. If someone has had this happen can you please tell me what to do. Thanks Andrea

Hi Andrea!

I have never bothered one of these after it drops it's crown, or at any other time, so I don't know about what you might have done in handling it. But I have seen my feather dusters drop their "feathers" several times, and a few weeks later they have grown them back. Also, they have reproduced many other feather dusters that are scattered "downstream" in the sand, but I have not been able to see what takes place in all of that.

Mine have dropped crowns before and all of them have always come back and regrown. In fact the one that does this most frequently is reproducing quite rapidly.
I've noticed that when changing the water if you get the new stuff near the tube worm they sometimes get upset. Could you have put some colder water or different PH water on it during the change?

I wouldn't panic. Chances are great you will see a whole new crown in a few weeks.

Thank you for your replys SHSE666 I always buy my water at the same place and it is kept in a storage closet at room temp and I use a plate when adding water so that I do not disturb the sand to terriably so I dont know if that would of caused the problem but who knows. I was just worried because of the color (red orange) I didnt know if I should take it out or not. I do not know if it would do something to my water Since my last post it has dropped the red orange thing and the red orange thing is just sitting on the sand bed. I will monitor Thanks again

Someone else's experience.

Thanks so much shse666 I guess it left its tube cause that picture is right on target except mine was a bright pretty red orange thats why it freaked me out cause my crown was purple and white well I left it in there I will see what it does overnight when I get to work in the morning it still looks like something is in the tube thanks again

I've never had one live long after dropping its crown. Usually they do it due to stress or starvation. Dr. Ron Shimek went into quite a bit of detail on them when he was a speaker here last time.

I have one that has lost it 3 times in 2 years but always has grown back. It has many babies all over the sand bed, too. The clowns used to always host in the 2 feather dusters. They were trained to stay open when the clowns laid in them. That might have been stressful for them.
