A new fish I found

I found this fish last night after the tank lights went out. I was looking around with a flashlight and I was shocked to find this goby. I added it to my tank probably two years ago. I thought it had died. NOT!
I knew they came out at night but ......

Yes I am sure. I had a hard time finding the picture to put on the board. It use to come out once in a while and then I never saw it again. I even went through a tank crash and it is still alive.
I have not seen one in the stores in a while. It is sometimes called a yellow brotula, yellow eel goby or lycopod goby. There is a good pic of it in the book by Scott Michael. (pocket expert guide) marine fishes

I see these guys in lfs occassionally. I have seen yellow and black ones. I wondered if they were really that reclusive. Now I know.

how ironic...I had the same thing happen to me with the same exact fish! It had been in my tank a few years and I thought it died. When upgrading to a larger tank, I was amazed to find it still alive.

Some LFSs label a fish "rare" because they rarely get them and want a premium price. I have seen purple tangs labeled, "from the Red Sea", rare.

Yes Tremelle, I am well aware of that.

Saj, here is a picture of a black one I found online.

I can't really tell by the pic but that looks like a good size eel.
The one I have is a Brotulina fusca or Dinematichthys riukiuensis. It only gets to be three to four inches.

It says right there in the link that it is a brotula. I found the link on a page that had pictures of different types of brotula including yours. Max size is 10cm not inches.

Species Dinematichthys is in the family Bythitdae. Look it up in the back of the Marine Atlas.

I found it! I looked in the Dr. Burgess's Atlas and saw a few different colors.
They come in black, yellow, and orange.
Very cool.
Thanks Nicki,
