A external Cannister for a Nano

Hi everyone.

Seeing how I have this hacker nature I been reading all over about mods and such and ran accross Chads mod to a Eheim where he put a fuge and light in one. Would this actual be bennificial or would the water flow to fast to really be more show than go in a Nano system?

I have seen the mod you are referring to and in my opinion I don’t see the benefit of such system. I believe the filter to be too small therefore the amount of fuge one could put it would also be very limited. Not enough to really be an impact or benefit plus even if it did work one would have to shut down the tank often to prune the fuge. I think one could achieve the same with good husbandry habits.

Most sumps are alot smaller in ratio than the tank.In Chad's case he has a 2 gallon tank and a 2 litre sump. I was looking at either enlarging a ehiem series filter (since they are square shouldnt be to hard or using a fluval 300 series that holds 6 litres and modifying the impeller for a slower flow. ;)

2224 holds 2.2 liters = .58 gallons
300 series fluval holds 6.6 liters = 1.74 gallons
400 series fluval holds 8.5 litres = 2.32 gallons

As you can see from this that the ratio can be quite large comapred to a Nano size versus a typical reef system in that this is only for the fuge itself and not for skimming and a seperate return would not be needed.

You have to consider many people have seen improvements with a fuge in the small chamber inside a nano (approx 2 litres in a 12 gal Nano) itself and this would be a improvement (3x-4x) over that in a self contained unit.

You also would not need to shut down the tank to prune at all jus turn the disconnects at the hose inputs and the cannister is easily removeable to open up and prune as needed.
