A/C not working tank temp = 87

i came home form work to day and my house was burrning up, about 85F. the a/c has been on constently and not droped the temp at all.

my tank is always hotter then the house thanks to lights and pumps, but i have always used the house a/c to keep the tank temp at about 81 to 82. currently the tank temp is 85 ish. i got it down using ice, but im running out of ice now. i have changed the A/C filter, turned off all electrical things except pumps, fridge, and this computer.

any thing else i should do?

Ahh. . Steve! Me too dear. I'm really sorry to hear someone else is going through the exact same thing at the exact same time. All lights are off but this room is sweltering. Our AC is totally out though. They guy called and said he'd fix it today if he had to stay until 10pm to do so. No problem I said, just fix it.

I'm sorry I can't offer anything other then moral support.

Set up a box or stand fan, open up all the doors on your stand / canopy, and blast as much air as you can get into it. It'll increase evaporation, which should cool things.

I liked summer until this point. It makes me paranoid for when I get a larger tank. I've got ice melting almost as fast as I can get it in there to float.

what kinda temps are you dealing with?

Used 1/4 HP Chiller w/ controller at Fish Gallery for $300...

I fought getting a chiller for many many years, figuring I could just get by with lots of fans. Last summer our A/C was just not keeping up (Ended up replacing the whole A/C), and picked up a used chiller.

I still have lotsa fans on my system, and treat the chiller as more of an insurance policy, and have been VERY glad it's there enough times that it easily has paid for itself...

The temps at 85 but the seahorse doesn't look well at all. He is very pale with labored breathing. I have two ice probes in the water but they won't chill the water but a few degrees if that and it will take a while I plugged them in about 2 hours ago. There is a box fan on the tank and I'm topping off with water that's cooler.

You guys should go buy ice from any convenience store, and put it in zip lock bags to cool the tank. Keep switching it out as it melts with more. It won't take too much.

A big fan blowing over the tank will help, as long as it is pointed at the water's surface. No tank lights should be on. You could turn off your skimmer pump as well. I would add an airpump with airstone to add oxygen to the tank. Or maybe set up the venturi on your maxijets to suck in air to mix with the water.

Go outside to your outside unit and hit it with the water hose. Make sure to clean it really good...Get all leaves out and clean the coils really good..this will help, trust me.

I had the same problem in my last house. Unfortunately, our AC was working correctly, but the place was so poorly insulated that it was almost impossible to keep the air temp below 85 during the day. I ended up buying a window AC unit for the room where the tank sat for about $100 at Home Depot. That thing was a life saver!

Fortunately, our new house is much better insulated and I only use a single clip-on fan to keep the temps around 77 during the day.

I hope you get the issues worked out soon, it's way too hot for this stuff.

It *is* way to hot for this. It looks like I might lose my big turbo snail . Simon the seahorse was relocated at a friends (I wub you guys!) until the air is fixed. Big bags of ice the temp is okay for the corals now and will remain off for the night.

did your ac get fixed....

Yes, sorry I was sleeping at 9am. Oh good I'll come by to pick him up this evening Aaron. Phew, yay Simon! My turbo looks. .I'm afraid to turn it over :?.

How are things on your end Steve? Any improvement?

Hope the tank is doing well. Once in a blue moon, I get freezing packets that you can throw into your sump in times like these. I gave away the other ones at the frag swap. I have sealed them into an airtight vaccuum sealer and placed a freezer bag over that. This way the fluid inside can never get into my water. I have them in my freezer for emergency situations. You could easily purchase similar cold packs or ice packs for a cooler.
