80g Rimless Apartment Tank Project

I live in Plano and I need the opinions/advice of some more experienced reef keepers. I have been in the setup phase of this system for quite some time. I have experience with salt water tanks (nano tanks), this is however my first large and more complex system. I would like to setup a time that someone could come over and take a look at my whole setup and advise on any changes that may be needed. I will be happy to buy lunch/dinner for the helping parties. Let me know if you are interested in helping a fellow reef keeper enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

Thanks!!

lots of thought went into that project huh??? im no expert and cant give you any advise therefore making me pretty much useless in this but it looks good!

looks nice so far...have you done a water test? you will definitely need to make sure nothing leaks with that pump in a place it could easily get wet. also need to test the drain when return is turned off. what type of lighting will you have? who made the tank stand? things look well so far, where are you located? a

This is a beautiful tank, the plumbing looks intimidating, very intimidating. You should start a build thread, folks are always giving opinions and advice there. Where did you get the stand?

I have been designing/ building this system for over a year now. I have been moving around a lot for my job but I am finally where I can relax for at least another 1.5 years. Water testing has not been done yet, I just finished dry fitting the plumbing. The thought of gluing all that plumbing quite frankly scares me, one piece at a time...The stand is a DIY project of mine, I will see if I can find build pics. Lighting will be a 36" Nova extreme pro T5 while the tank matures and I will learn how to DIY a LED fixture.

I live in Austin Ranch apartments, North Plano/ South Colony.

What do you guys think about the suspending of the Snapper CL pump? It was initially a temporary modification but I like the extra space it gives me. Pros/ Cons???

First of all i hav to say i like it when I see a thought out project. Looks good so far. I have no direct experience witht he pump, but all the vibration (if any) would be sent to the plumbing structure, rather than aloowing some of that energy to dissipate into the stand, floor, etc.

I definitely agree with your train of thought. The return portion of the CL has SPA flex 3/4" piping so that should absorb a lot of the vibration. The Drain portion is however all rigid 2" PVC so I could see how that might be an issue.

Thanks for pointing that out!!!

What kind of wood, finish, stain is on the front of your stand? Where did you get that wood from? I love the grain it has.

I would rethink the mixing station's location unless you can add a positive shutoff type valve(kent's), a substantial spill pan and some kind of leak detection. [smilie=smile.gif] Other than that, it's looks awesome and well thought out. [smilie=clapping.gif]

Cheers,

The stand is skinned in Ikea wood veneer on mdf board, can't remember the name. Yes I cheated but it was exactly what I was looking for.

If you read prior post you will see that I said the RODI tank with have a Kent float valve. I wish I had a better place to put the mix station but it is a small apartment. The RODI /ATO tanks will be monitored closely and the RODI will not be left on unless necessary to fill tanks.

I also posted this on Reef central in a little more detail, I just realized that I did not list everything here as I did on reef central. Tricky trying to keep up with what I have posted on each site. Sorry.

Tonight I am going to start a more detail thread under the reef discussion forum.

Moderators feel free to delete this or just let it go to the end of the line.

Tank and plubming looks great. You should have plenty of flow. That hanging pump might be troublesome down the road. Can't say I've ever seen it done like that. There may be a reson for that. I would look into it a bit more before firing it up.

No problem, just glad to know I'm not the only one getting old and senile. [smilie=rofl.gif] [smilie=rofl.gif] [smilie=rofl.gif]
