55 gallon reef prep questions

Hi all-

I'm working on setting up a 55 gallon reef. I've just added saltwater; all I have is filter so far.

I'd like to know the best skimmer and powerheads that I should use for this tank. It will be the home of a maroon clown or two and some soft corals in the future. I will use LS, LR and a little crushed coral.

So, if anyone has under a 100 gallon reef and wants to recommend a skimmer or powerhead, please do. I'm still unsure if I'd rather have one bigger powerhead or two smaller on each side.

I was considering a Prizm skimmer or Visi-Jet skimmer, but want to hear feedback from people who have tried these products; how did they work for you??

For powerheads, thinking either Maxi-Jet or Aqua-clear.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Jen

P.S. I'm on a TIGHT budget at that moment, so if anyone has any of those units or similar to sell- or any suggestions- let me know. Thanks.

If I were you, I'd go with the CPR Bak Pak or Aqua-C Remora if you are doing a sumpless reef. When it comes to skimmers, you get what you pay for.

Maxi-jets are great pumps. So are the Aqua-Clears. Have you looked into the Hydor Korallia's yet? Much cooler power head for close to the same money. HTH

I recommend the Aqua-C remora Pro, you can hang it on your tank or use it in a sump. I have been using one in the sump/fuge of my 58G for a year. I setup my system similar to another member, who had it on a 105G with mostly LPS and softy's and easier SPS pieces(monti cap's etc).

Cheers!
