400w mh bulb

Hey yall im new at sps coral but i would love to see them grow any recomondation on which bulb would help sps coral fast

400w is a lot of bulb, but the reflector type needs to be factored in as well. If you simply want growth and aren't interested in the looks, a 10,000K bulb is a good choice. If you need / want a little more blue so you can enjoy your SPS, perhaps you may want a 12,000K, 14,000K, or even a 20,000K bulb. This is one of the things you have to decide for yourself. Are you in a hurry to see growth? If so, the lower Kelvin rated bulbs are best. If you want to see pretty colors, higher Kelvin is preferred but growth rates are slower.

what bulb type is it se or de. if se i would go radium 20k. it has great par and colors up corals. if you check most major coral etailers vivid and worldwide corals this is the bulb they use on their tanks

Yes 10k will make majority of corals brown within a couple months. Especially if you use xm 10k. Go radium 20k great par and color

I love my Aquamaxx 14K bulbs. I have great growth and very good color and best of all, these bulbs are very reasonably priced. :D

Cheers,

Ron you might check but I read on rc marine depot is not going to carry aquamaxx bulbs any more if you can find aquamaxx they are good bulbs also

They just had them on sale again, I was gonna get them on the GB with Alex but they must have sold their stock of them as they have been taken off the site. I wonder what happened??

Cheers,

The Aquamaxx's are showing back up on Marine Depot but currently out of stock. I sent an email to them and they will have more in stock soon, the website also shows a 33% off promotion starting on 1/1/10.

Cheers,

Yep got my notice tonight too. I'm going to try them out. Have you run Radiums at all Ron? Curious to see how these compare.

Haven't run Radium's over my tank but was gonna go Radiums until I ran across the Radium thread on RC and saw the diehard Radium fans converting to Aquamaxx's. Did get a chance to put a Aquamaxx 400W next to the Radium 400W on derek4reals tank and it is as they said... coral and bulb coloration is the same with the aquamaxx being a tad brighter with more Par. This was with Lumatech e-ballast tho that run like HQI's imo. Just come on over and see for yourself.... good coloration imo.

Cheers,

I'm running XM 15K 400 watt bulbs on PFO pendants and ballast and I love them. There is a lot more blue in it than I was expecting. If you're ever in the denton/argyle area, let me know. You can come check them out.

Been happy with my new XM 400 20K running on the lumatek switchable ballast. Lots of punch and brighter than the old 250 14K aquamaxx and have been getting better growth in my tank since I have been running the xm's. There was a reefkeeping article not long ago that showed the aquamaxx 400k and radium 400K having identical spectrums.

Nice thing about 20K 400's is that you get simalr par to a lot of 10K's on 250's and you do not have to supplement to bring out the colors.

Unfortuneately the days of 2 for 1 and 33% off on aquamaxx are probably over.
