Ok, so I know what a lot of you guys are saying.. What's with such a weird upgrade? Well.. My current tank was bought on the cheap, and I modified it to suit the needs I had when I lived in FL.. However, now that I'm in TX, things have changed.. Mostly, I'm not doing an inwall system, as was planned in FL.. This means that my idea of putting the overflow in the side wall doesn't make a whole lot of sense.. Not to mention that it makes the cabinetry protion of the build more difficult..
So, after many weeks of consideration, mostly centered around the glass vs acrylic debate, I decided to buy a Tenecor 350R tank.. The main reason being the warranty.. These guys stand behind their products, and I really admire that.. The tank measures 96" x 36" x 24".. I like this depth mostly because it suits my lighting.. I currently run 3x250 MH and plan to add some VHO to the mix when I get the new tank started.. But I find this to be plenty of penetration for a 24" deep tank.. And it keep my power bills relatively low..
The new tank will bascially be set up the same as the current one, as I'm going to continue using the same sump / refugium setup with the only change being a bit of a different setup on the lighting of the 'fuge.. I'm not happy with the shop light that's on there, and I'm probably going to add another.. From a plumbing standpoint, my tanks are pretty straightforward.. I have one drain that feeds the 'fuge, and another that feeds the sump... The 'fuge gravity feeds water into the sump, ahead of the return plumbing.. The return pump is a Reeflo Dart which feeds up and splits off into two 3/4" returns right before entering the tank..
My main change to the new setup is that I may use a Barracuda or a Hammerhead so that I can run penductors.. I've seen a few tanks that use them properly and they seem to be a great way to add flow without costing a whole lot of cash..
Other than the return, my system has 3 Vortech MP-40W powerheads and a Tunze 6080 for water movement.. The Vortechs are awesome.. And they will probably end up placed about the same in the new tank..
From a filtration standpoint, I am a big believer in the Berlin method, and use 25 Micron bags which I change 5 times a week, and launder with bleach.. There are a pair of 36" carbon chambers on the system now that I will probably keep, and I use a custom I-Tech 400 skimmer that I'm very happy with..
I'm going to include some pics of my current setup here, and I'll update as I start getting parts for the new setup in..
