300 Gallon Glass Thickness

Good Afternoon DFW,

I am getting ready to venture into a 300 Gallon FOWLR. Later i may change into a reef.

For a few years now i have had a 72 gallon Bowfront reef thats done great and now its time for me to upgrade.

I have looked at alot of tank manufactures and have decided on 2 tanks that are within my price budget.

1. Marineland 300 with corner overflows. Glass is 1/2 in sides and 3/4 in the bottom.
2. Glass Cages 300 with corner glass overflows. Same thickness.

The other day i was with my New LFS in Dallas and he recieved some quotes from his tank manufactures and they recommended nothing less than 3/4 glass thickness. I called glass cages and they sid they would be happy to make it in 3/4 glass. Marinland would not.

So help me understand why the glass thickness matters. I am building my own customer stand. So niether company offers a warranty. however glass cages said they will give me the foam for under the aquarium no charge.

I have reserched everything i can think and im ready to buy this week. This is the Last Question i have.

Thanks,

Water within an aquarium exerts tremendous pressure outwards (water weighs aprox 8 lbs per gallon). Therefore it is important to use the correct thickness of glass or acrylic to match this pressure. The builder needs to take into account aquarium size to determine glass or acrylic thickness. Adding cross-braces gives the aquarium more strength. Bowing of the aquarium cause distortion. Hope this helps.

for me personally 300 gallons i would go 3/4" that gives more surface area for the silicone to bond. that is alot of water to spill if the seams give way due to the pressure

you might ask if the 1/2"tanks are eurobraced.

on my 150 that was custom built i went 1/2" sides and 1" base and eurobracing it is built like atank and should never bow if any very little.

might send david varela dvups1 a pm he has a cheat sheet for glass thickness he has built my last three tanks

I would not go with glasscages. Marineland makes awesome tanks, I have never heard of a marineland tank flooding someones house, the same cannot be said for GC's. As mentioned, I would ask if they are eurobracing and would really consider a stand from the tankbuilder for the warrantee. If you have a one story house, 300G will fill it with 3"-4" of water.

Cheers,

Yeah sort of euro bracing is bracincing that goes around the sides of the tank but not across the middle of the tank.
