140 tank build

First off want to say thanks to Cheryl for letting me have her old 240 that broke.

With that said I'm in the process of tearing it down and am have decided to build a 5ft by 2ft by 18in tall.

Last night got the broke back piece off 8ft by 2ft (surprisingly pretty easy) and found out that it's pretty easy to cut 1/2in glass just with a regular hand held diamond bit glass cutter with some oil.

I will be posting pics later tonight or tomorrow.

I have decided that when the time comes I am going to build 2 overflow boxes in each back corner. My question is does it really matter how big I make the holes? Are there benefits to larger or smaller or certain sizes?

Thanks for the help guys.

Congratulations on the glass cutting. I have special equipment to cut glass and I know the technique but a novice taking on that project...impressive. It's kind of scary till that first crack happens and then it's easy from there.
Make sure you sand the edges.

Use 1" overflow and 3/4" returns for a 120. You would be suprised at the flow this setup handles. If you get the overflow too big it might gurgle and burp a lot. I've seen up to 200 gallon tanks with this setup.

What are you using for a return pump?

I don't really have the supplies yet I'm waiting to make sure it will hold water he he. But I was probably just gonna go with a Mag 9

what grit sand paper would you recommend?

Well it's been a while since updated this thread but here's how the tank turned out..... have the canopy built now and have gotten together a
50g sump
PM Bullet 2 Skimmer
Mag 12 for main return
Mag 24 for skimmer
and plumbing is just about finished

are you confident the tank will hold the water without any eurobracing? how thick is the glass? The 240 had braces for a reason. nice build. i would consult dvsup1 on the boards as he builds tanks and could tell you the saftey factor/

Well I filled it probably an 1" 1/2 from the top with just RO water and had no leaks only let it sit for like 2 weeks though

Alright so almost a year later now Hahah........Anyways added 120lb of Carib Sea Live sand and am going to add the salt tonight. It's been quit a while since I cycled a tank so I'll have some questions for those of you who will be kind enough to answer. My plan is to let the sand cycle on it's own and then add about 200lbs of live rock that is about 2.5 years old from my 75g reef that is up and running now. I have some hair algae problems right now and there's really not much coral so I was going to give all the rock a nice scrub before putting it in the new set up. Anyone see any problems with that, that I may be over looking?

Alright so my plan for the euro bracing is to do just the top with 3" wide sections of 1/2" glass with a 5 1/2 wide brace for the middle..... Do you all think that this is sufficient enough or does the bottom of the tank need to be euro braced as well. Also if I did 2 1/2" wide pieces instead of 3 would it provide the same amount of support or not?

Well after two attempts at getting the euro bracing done I've finally got most of the new tank up and running with the transfer of some of my live rock and fish from the 75g. Just got the new lights in check em out!!!

Just got the order for 2 Aquabeam 1000HD 50K/14K and 4 Aquabeam 600 Ultra 2 - 14K and 2 - 50K with the aquaray multicontrol with 8 sockets :) I just plugged them in and set them on top of my 140 that is in the process of being finished and I think they look awesome. The blues look very very cool. Of coarse I'm not going to leave them on top the tank and will building something for mounting (Not quit sure just how I want to go about it yet) but I thought I'd show them off...:)
Oh ya and the pics are with my iphone so they don't do them any justice at all
