135 DAS build.

Ok I have a 135 gallon DAS tank. I am thinking about drilling it and making a closed loop on it and make it reef ready. Are the filtration boxes on them sealed at the bottom? And any suggestions on equipment to look into would be great. At the moment all I have is the tank. I am going to drill it first so I know before purchasing stuff if it is going to break or not. I was thinking either 250 or 400 watt HQI lamps. I am going to try building up this tank as a predominatly(sp?) SPS and Clam tank. So suggestions and stuff on building it up are welcome. :D

John,

Once you add the overflow boxes, I suggest you seal off the bottom portions, otherwise, it will slowly over flood your sump.

I would take the risk to get the tank drill since having a overflow box is just a pain in the butt.

As for SPS corals, I would wait to have a mature tank before moving to SPS. Starting a SPS tank is really hard to control the nitrates and ammonia level when setting up a huge tank.

If you do go with SPS, go with bare bottom and have lots of tunze in the tank. Let me know if you need help moving the tank or anything.

I will let you know Tri. I am really trying to figure out a way to use the box that is part of the DAS filtration as my overflow. But I am still kinda confused about it. Should I just try removing the box and building an overflow in it? Or does the idea of using the existing box sound feasible?

John,

I would remove DAS totally and put two overflow boxes in the tank. Drill 3 holes on each side where you have two holes draining into the sump and one returns the water to the display.

Well I got the box out. Next step, drill it and see if it cracks. I am going to try making this an sps and clam tank. But I will also try growing LPS and softies in it also. I plan to use this tank to benifit DFWMAS since I got it from DaliTom for free, for joining the club. All corals that are fraggable in it will fragged for members at the cost of free. Just things to look forward to I guess. It will still be some time till it starts getting set up. Right now I am just trying to get the tank together and make sure it is going to hold water before I start buying equipment for it. :D

Tri are you saying to have it where there are four drains and two returns? What is the purpose of having more than two drains? Also I am thinking about having a horizontal overflow instead of two on each side. Which sounds like a better idea? Any suggestions that anybody has for anything on this tank would be appreciated.

I think I am going to go toothless on the overflow. That way it is able to skim across the whole surface area versus just through the teeth.

I wouldn't go toothless on the overflows. You will end up with snails, crabs and small fish on the sump. I cut the teeth out of my reef ready DAS and replaced it with egg crate. I still had 3 chromis disappear with one showing up in the return section of the sump.
