100 gallon seeahorse/pipefish tank

I have just gotten permission to make our 100 gallon a seahorse/pipefish tank! :D Any suggestions of how it should be set up?

wow Layla that will be so much fun!

I think a lot will have to do with what kind of direction you want to go. Many seahorse keepers do not recommend mixing species of seahorses. On the other hand some say if you get them from the same breeder your risk is minimized. If you want them to breed you probably want a species dedicated tank. I'd get something you don't already have -maybe a larger species?

Pipefish are also considered a bit risky to mix with horses due to shared pathogens. It's like mixing WC seahorses with CB seahorses. I'm buying some pipefish and intend on testing the waters with a couple of my juvis - I'd never risk my entire Erectus herd with them.

I'm sure you'll find something interesting for your tank. Just how many seahorses can one put in a 100 gallon tank??

Right now I have Kudas and Reidis cohabitating with a banded pipefish and two dragon pipefish(CB) and have had no problems. I would like to keep the 100 gallon with the same mix although I would love to have some tiger tails as well. The 60 gallon cube is still going to be set up as an erectus tank and the 60 gallon hex will be converted to Great Seahorses(Kelloggi). We want the 100 gallon to be set up for several months before introducing the horses so we can have lots of pods already to go.

Well see - you've already got it figured out

I am not one to jump all over you with regard to the pipefish thing, after all I too want to try it. If you bought your seahorses from a LFS they were probably already mixed with pipefish anyway. It has its risks but I imagine with proper QT and management, the risks can be minimized. You have had all of yours for a while now haven't you?

I would definitely 100% QT any new additions that's where I think most of the risk lies. I just ordered some pipefish from Liveaquaria, they will not be mixed with anything for quite some time.

I'm assembling quite an assortment of macroalgae so if you need some for that new tank, give me a holler.

Mine have been together for awhile now. QT will definately happen when we transfer to the 100 gallon. Don't want to make any mistakes. I wonder how many we can put in a 100 gallon?!?!?

Now that is the millon $$$$$ dollar question
two things Iwill say about pony tanks though
You dont need metal halide
The flow does not need to be as strong
in general (other than combating algae) I think they are easier to maintain than a reef.

Keep us posted on your progress I am looking forward to seeing this

BTW was your male pregnant?

No, he never had any babies that I saw and has still been flirting with the big Kuda female. I think she just isn't interested in him and the female reidis I have are too young to be interested either. Gives me more time to prepare! :D We will start posting pix of our progress with the 100 gallon. We are still in the planning stages right now. We want to create a natural type environment for them so we plan to take our time!
